Description This lovely beast I've been drawing for almost ten years finally got a watercolor picture of her! The matriarch of the hrionieten, a wingless distant cousin to griffins, is as old as the ice that layers the land she oversees. She and her population of lesser hrionieten have lived comfortably in the fortress that is the glacier caves since the ice dragons fled their home. They are the top predator in the land they inhabit.
Their relations to griffins is seen in their wickedly hooked beak and sharp talons, although they've developed large fangs from their lower jaw and only have two talons to each forearm, wit her three on their feet. They have feathers, and they're soft upon hatching, but cold and moisture shapes their feathers over time into sharp protrusions capable of harming others (and sometimes themselves).

That's a nice feathery protogriffin.
I like the hunched over arms pulled back pose.

I'll never be able to pronounce that species name.

Lol yeah that's fair. A really long time ago I found a list of old English (Anglo Saxon?) words, but I can't find it anymore, nor can I verify that the name means what it's supposed to. It's two words, "hrio" and "nieten," which was listed as meaning snow and monster respectively. No idea if the language works that way, either :/
But now it's kinda just my own thing, and I pronounce it "ryo-nii-ten." Well, and I guess nieten has a bunch of other meanings in different languages, but I digress~

Pfft, who care if you do language right? I always name things by Google translating cool words into Latin or German with no regards to proper usage or context.
