An HOUR?! That's all it took?! Seriously?! It would have taken me a week, and I would end up with a crappy result! I swear there's a secret to it... Or maybe if I had a better understanding of this, it wouldn't take so long...

well then it's just up to you and train a little more. That's the only way to get better. ( I think you already know this) but I couldn't come up with anything else to write XDD
I think you'll be good in the future if you just start train. 
So I hope you'l try and even if it looks bad don't give up on it, try a little more, then I think it'll look much better.
