We must have a goal in anything we undertake. Otherwise, we will give up.

If a dog sees a rabbit and begins to give chase, and two other dogs begin to follow the first for the love of the chase, but didn't see the rabbit for themselves, the two later dogs will eventually stop because of the difficulty of the chase, the first dog however, will not stop until he has gained his prize.

In the same way, in all our endeavors we see this principle. Every new year people get gym memberships and three months later stop coming because they have no goal, no vision, no rabbit to chase. They may have some other dog they're following, a body builder or celebrity who they want to look like, but they don't have a goal or ambition.

The same is true in spiritual things. When we set out to pray, and fast, and do the works of piety, we will get nowhere unless we have a goal kept ever before us. And that goal, is union with God in Christ. It's the goal of cultivating the virtues, of knowing God more thoroughly and more completely, deepening the relationship with Him. There's also the goal of defeating the demons and subduing our passions, which we also must do because of the love of Christ. When you set such goals before you, your prayer life will become a fountain of living water springing up unto life for you, and for those around you. Set before yourself the goal of becoming holy, for this goal is one God will be delighted to bring to fruition.
