The sign, of course, came from the dead. In the night, they crawled out of the earth unbidden and looked to her, with their empty eye sockets, as if expectant.
'Why are you still here?,' she imagined them saying. 'It's time to go, Little Death, to where you belong.'

So she went. Without a word to anyone, and without ever looking back, Vashti shed the bounds of Skydas like an old skin and made her way toward the territory of the Kol.
