Hey, hoevelkamp.

First off, vielen dank on the awesome tutorial. Also, sorry if the German is off. Google sometimes hates me.

Anyway, I've got a question on your city lights setup. Every time I do it, I end up with a washed out, barely visible layering. Does it need to be a separate sphere from the rest, or what?

If it helps, I am running 3DS Max 2013 with VRay as my main renderer.

Thanks in advance,
PerneseWarrior

Echt ein unglaublich hilfreiches Tutorial! Sehr schΓΆn gemacht, wobei bei den Bumpmaps Normal Maps besser funktionieren und im fertigen Render schicker aussehen

Interesting. So what program did you use to make these planets?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to TekComic [2012-07-14 02:01:38 +0000 UTC]

The maps and textures I use for the planets are created in Photoshop and then brought into Autodesk 3ds max to create the worlds in real 3d.

Hi, could you go into more detail about how you created the city lights map?

I need help with 3ds Max!

hoevelkamp In reply to GlenRoberson [2011-07-17 11:29:10 +0000 UTC]

And how can I help you?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GlenRoberson In reply to hoevelkamp [2011-07-17 15:36:13 +0000 UTC]

I NEED MORE RAM!!!!
I'm just getting started with 3ds Max and can you recommend a good book for beginners. My biggest weak point is lighting.
When I create a render, I then create or find a background to match. Also, my system only has four gigabytes of ram.
I will be upgrading soon, very soon. As far as the books go, would a 'Bible' work or something more pointed to newbees?
Anyway, I really love your work. I hope that I can learn form you.
Thank you for responding.
Glen

Hi Glen,

well, yeah in the long run you'd need more RAM. But in the meantime you'll get very far with the four gb you have.

I can recommend this [link] I'm more of a visual learner, so video works fine for me. Never bought a single book about 3d in my life. There are also lots of tutorials on 3ds max available on youtube.

If you have more specific questions, just note me.

Have fun!

hay where could i get a pic like the one you use to make craters

E-Squid [2010-05-31 17:06:23 +0000 UTC]

The craters look almost more like round plateaus to me.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to E-Squid [2010-05-31 17:13:33 +0000 UTC]

Agreed, I could've done that better. But for the tutorial it does its job, don't you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

E-Squid In reply to hoevelkamp [2010-06-01 13:27:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, certainly. And all you'd have to do to really correct it would be going over it with the burn/dodge tool in Photoshop or GIMP.

adhii [2010-01-25 15:35:42 +0000 UTC]

great...
just as and additions..
you can use mix map for the diffuse channel to mix your cities map and your ocean map..
it would add the details..

and if you use finalrender like i do.. then you`ll have fs-layer
then you can have multi layered diffuse map.. and you can just use layer blending just like in PS

but yeah, this is great stuff..

The close up looks fantastic, I actually know how to make seamless planet maps but yeah - sometimes it isn't necessary The craters was a good idea too, craters are surprisingly rare in space art

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2010-01-25 15:15:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Matthew. Yeah, I vote for more craters in space art. It's not that hard to achieve.
