Reading up on weretiger folklore, as I have been for a while now, I found a curious pattern; in many Korean stories (but also some Chinese and Burmese ones), weretigers tend to appear under the appearance of monks. For example, it is believed that the Hangyangbu district suffered from frequent and bloody tiger attacks at one point, and when the legendary general Gang Gam-Chan was asked to investigate, he found that the responsible were actually a couple monks who were really weretigers. Luckily, when found out, they agreed to exile themselves. As soon as the monks left, the attacks stopped for good.
Although dangerous and deceiving, these tiger monks posessed deep knowledge and wisdom on many things, and sometimes this wisdom proved beneficial for regular people. For example, another story speaks of a young man who was very poor. One night, he stumbled upon a gathering of weretiger monks in the forest. He hid and spied on their conversation; they were talking about how the daughter of a very rich and important man from a nearby town was very ill and no doctors could cure her. They, however, knew the cure, and discussed it among each other. The young man cured the girl and ended up marrying her and inheriting a fortune. But maybe he was lucky that the weretiger monks never found out he was spying on them!
Another curious pattern in these stories is that the weretiger's disguise was rarely perfect; in many Korean and Chinese tales they have trouble hiding certain aspects of their appearance, especially the tail, and also of their behavior (for example, if offered a drink they would lap it up like a cat).
