Chapalmalania was a giant raccoon that lived in South America during the Pliocene, until displaced by the arrival of bears from North America. It was the size of today's American black bear (its fossils were even mistaken for a bear's originally) and seems to have been omnivorous with a tendency to carnivory; its bite marks have been found even on glyptodont remains.

Well racoons and bears seem to have some genetic similarities so this doesn't surprise me
But a bear-sized raccoon is an altogether different breed of monstocity

omg I love Chapalmalania-I wished more people talked about it (it's a freaking bear-sized raccoon!!!)

though I bet my step-dad would sh$t bricks seeing this-he has a diehard hatred for raccoons (at a summer camp he works for sometimes, a big one climbed out of a trash can he was walking towards and he ran to the other side of the camp screaming bloody murder)

That's one P.O. raccoon.  The fact that it's as big as a black bear makes it even more intimidating.

This is pretty darn similar to a future evolution idea I had about raccoons becoming grizzly bear-like criltters.

Imagine the force that'd be reckon with a rabid Chapalmalania, as if normal rabid raccoons weren't bad enough.

Believe me, non-rabid raccoons are already a handful  when mad

MikeSpikester11 In reply to HodariNundu [2017-05-03 03:32:51 +0000 UTC]

Yep, so I heard, they can be nasty even when non-rabid but a rabid one is just an nightmare.

Anyways nice work as usual.

Nuclearzeon2 In reply to HodariNundu [2017-09-09 03:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply, but I personally think this guy was like a panda: mostly herbivorous, but will occasionally eat meat.

Also, there were multiple species. How do we know different species didn't have different dietary habits, like modern Ursus bears?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HodariNundu In reply to Nuclearzeon2 [2017-09-09 04:01:19 +0000 UTC]

The frequency of Chapalmalania bite marks found on fossils would suggest it was more carnivorous than the panda.

I guess you can tell that from study of the teeth- like they used to conclude that the cave bear was mostly vegetarian.

Nuclearzeon2 In reply to HodariNundu [2017-09-09 04:18:47 +0000 UTC]

How do we know it didn't scavenge those kills?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HodariNundu In reply to Nuclearzeon2 [2017-09-09 05:32:59 +0000 UTC]

It most likely did. That doesn´t make it any less carnivorous.
