Description              He pulled out a chair for me and I sat down at the elegantly dressed table.  “This table is lovely.” I mentioned and watched him sit down. “It was given to me by a soul who was a marble mason. Excellent man, but he raped 20 women and killed three children that a few of his victims claimed to be his.” I cringed at this. “I don’t see how you can sit on that throne all day and process all these evil people without going insane.” I thought aloud. Hades shrugged and called out, “Regimus!” When a hidden door opened from behind a bush he turned back. “You grow numb to even the most heinous of crimes and learn the humans are really just pieces of flesh that sin and never learn. Terrible way to look at it, I know, but it’s what keeps me sane.” He smiled.
Inwardly I rolled my eyes. Yeah, Hades, sane! That was a good joke. A man who I had glimpsed in the kitchen before now placed a steaming bowl of what looked like heavenly Bird stew and a golden cup of ambrosia and wine. I took a sip and sighed, “Where did you get this wine?”  I asked and looked at the cup. Hades looked up at me. “Island next to Crete, it has a very lovely vineyard. I go in and take what I need once a year to keep me happy until the next year.”  He smiled. I didn’t think anything of his petty theft, it was us God’s realization that we owned the world, and we LET humans live on it. If we wanted to take something by all means we could, and we did.
I leaned over and tasted the wonderful dish of pheasant before me.  Sitting in the lounging chair and trying to eat was always a feat I could barely accomplish. I ended up sitting upright and lying back when I was full to relax. Hades, on the other hand, seemed to have mastered the art of reclined eating and was doing so quite happily. He noticed me sitting up and commented. “I just prefer to sit like this at the table and then relax when I’m done with a cup of wine.” I replied and popped another piece of my dinner in my mouth. Hades watched me chew the bird up and then smiled to himself, looking down, when I swallowed. “What?” I asked and dipped my fingers into the washing bowl, since the bird stew was a little greasy. “Nothing, I just enjoy your company, that’s all.” He said and raised his glass to me.
“To the Goddess who seems to WANT to be here now.” He said and took a swig. I did too, but as I did, I thought about what he meant. Did I seem like I WANTED to be here, or was I doing it because now I had to?  Did I want to be here? Did I like it here in Hell? I looked over at him as he spooned some more stew and a piece of bird bobbed on his spoon. Was I in love with this man? This God of Death? I shook my head slightly and finished the stew. It was certainly wonderful, the taste had been magnificent, but the roast pork legs that came out next topped the icing to this night’s cake.
I could see the grease and juices dripping off, and the spices swirling around where they fell. I could see not only the heat, but the aroma steaming off of the leg. Hades watched me as I looked it over. “We don’t have pork too much up on Olympus, Artemis, though she is the Goddess of the Hunt, doesn’t like to see us eating pork. We only get it when she’s away.”  I explained and took my fork. I cut into it carefully, watching the moist juice squirt as I did. I took a bite and let my eyes roll back in my head. “This is delicious!” I exclaimed and took another piece. I could hear Hades chuckle as he himself began to eat. Finally, everything was done and some fruits were brought out to snack on.  A maid held out a fresh washing bowl and I dipped my fingers in daintily, wiping them with a linen cloth on her arm. “Thank you.” I said when I was finished and laid back, a pear in one hand. She looked at me a moment, confused as to why I thanked her, and then walked over to Hades so he could do the same. Hades, on the other hand, didn’t thank her, which I knew probably wouldn’t happen.
“So was that a nice enough dinner for you?” he asked. I rolled my head to the right and smiled wearily. “Good enough? That dinner was fantastic, don’t think I’ve ever had better, and this wine is superb.  These fruits are so fresh.” I complimented and bit into the pear. Hades grabbed an apple and sat back, beginning to munch away himself. “Is it a little hot out here now?” I asked, throwing my cloak to the ground which had been sitting under me. “One moment it’s cold, the next it’s hot. The only thing I can say is that the sun’s setting. Apollo takes his chariot about a mile through that rock when the human day is over. Luckily, it goes nowhere near the souls so they’re still trapped.” I didn’t like the way he said that. “So it always gets hot this time of night here?” I asked. Hades shook his head, “Just in this garden, it’s the only one that technically outside down here, and it’s also the closest thing to where Apollo goes.” I nodded, understanding.
“That’s why the pool is here, when it gets too hot to stand it, just jump in. It’s enchanted so that it always is as cool as you need it to be, never too cold, never too warm.”  He pointed to the pool of water we had stood by before. “I think I’ll just dip my feet in.”  I suggested and stood, setting the half eaten pear down, but taking my wine.
There was a stone bench just for the purpose, set just on the edge of the pool and just low enough the water only went up to about your calf. I raised my skirt ever so lightly and sat down, the spun to lower my legs in the water. Hades was right, the water was the perfect temperature to cool me down. “Apollo should be passed and the heat gone in about half an hour.” I jumped, Hades was standing right behind me. I nodded and scooted over so he could join me. Hades sat down facing the opposite direction so that his feet were on dry land.
We sat in silence for a moment as I sipped at my wine and swung my legs back and forth. “Hades?” I called. His head snapped in my direction. “I do like being down here. It’s not so bad once it grows on you and you start to understand the people that live here.” I said and looked down at the water as I did. Hades didn’t move, he just turned his head so that he was looking straight again. Another silence as he thought this over. “Do you like butterflies?” Hades asked suddenly. I was kind of shocked that his thought process would go in that direction. “Umm…yes. I AM a child of the Spring.” I replied.
Hades stood and held out his hands to the Willow tree.  I watched and waited in wonder as his eyes closed and he began to concentrate. Suddenly, the Weeping Willow began to weep, water, or real tears, began to tumble down the leaves and soft branches to the water.  The water droplets never reached the water though, before they hit the surface, the water droplets floated away, twisting and turning. Before my eyes were about one hundred water droplets and with a flash there was about a hundred butterflies in their place, flying and flittering about.
I backed away from the bench and stood up, placing my wine cup down. I laughed and reached out into the swarm of butterflies. Two landed on my hand and sat there peacefully, opening their wings and closing them again, color everywhere. With a snap of Hades’ fingers they started flying in a pack around me, swirling up my body in a spiral until they reached my head and fanned out everywhere. For a few blissful minuets I was in the middle of a hundred butterflies, all calmly flying around me.  Their colors were lovely. Every color of the rainbow was there and it was so beautiful. Even the ones on Earth that I played with every Spring weren’t this lovely.
“Oh, they’re gorgeous.” I murmured and reached out to Hades who just stared at my hand.
“Oh come on! Take it! I won’t kill you. I just want you to see this!” I reached again and he slowly took my hand. He was so cold and his hand was even paler than mine. His touch was almost like ice but it felt fine as I pulled him into the middle of the cloud of butterflies. “Look at the colors.” I whispered and reached out. Immediately another butterfly landed there and I brought it down to Hades’ face. He looked at the insect suspiciously and then looked to me. “It’s lovely.” He said and pulled my waist close to him. “You’re lovely.” Right then I know I blushed, and not some tiny a little bit of red on the cheeks blush, I’m talking every drop of my body went to my cheeks right then blush. Stuttering I turned away and the butterflies flew off and out of the garden.
I walked a few paces away and sat back down on the bench. I felt him watch me go. “I didn’t make you uncomfortable did I?” he asked innocently. I snapped my head up at the question. “Oh! Me?! No! I don’t get embarrassed.” I shook it away and when I saw he didn’t believe me I smiled charmingly. “You could never make me embarrassed Hades, you’re just too…” I lost the word I was going to say, “Easy to be around.” I spit out, hoping it didn’t sound too stupid. I saw his eyes glint with something and then he held his hand out for me. “I think it’s time for bed. You’ve had a long day.” He said and I took his hand.
“But I’m not even tired.” I tried to complain but he was already picking my cloak op from where it had been laying. “Nevertheless, you have to face Moira tomorrow and I want you strong and rested.” He handed placed it on my shoulders and as I did I could hear him breathing in my scent. I couldn’t blame him, I always smelt of fresh spring flowers. Slowly he led me to the door and opened it. I didn’t say anything as he walked me back to my room. I should say something nice, thank him, or say goodnight. A sweet goodnight was always nice and a good thank you for that wonderful dinner was defiantly in order. I forgot to take that cup of wine with me but that was okay, cook would have some later and I could always ask for some. Yes, a nice thank you was what I would say when we got to my door.
As we approached my door I thought of how I would say it, “Thank you for that wonderful date, Hades.” Wait? Date? Is that what that was? Odd that my husband just took me on a date. Maybe I should call it something different. How about just dinner? Yes, just dinner, that’s what I would call it.
I reached the mahogany door and turned, breathing in. “Thank you for that wonderful dinner Hades. It was delicious and I really appreciate the butterflies from the Willow.  They were gorgeous.” I said smoothly, trying not to blurt it out. Then I did blurt something out. “I love you.”
WHAT?! WHERE THE HELL DID THAT COME FROM?
The shock registered on Hades’ face and I’m almost positive it did mine as well. “E-Excuse me?” he finally stuttered out. I froze and I could feel the blood draining from my face. “I-I…” There I was, stammering like an idiot when I had just said three critical words to nay relationship. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…” I tried to apologize, but a part of me was kicking myself in the shin. I could feel the little angel on my shoulder screaming, “No! You do love him you fool! Look at him! Dark, mysterious, brooding, HOT!! What more do you want? Sure he ain’t no Apollo, but he’s pretty damn close!”  I tried to brush it away but the more I listened the more I believed it. I had thought I was falling in love with him, so why, after that, couldn’t I be?
Defiantly I squared my shoulders and looked Hades in the eye, “I think I love you and not the brotherly love kind. But I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”  I waited for his reply. His face was so confused after I said this, and it showed, for the first time I had truly caught this God off guard. We stared at each other for a moment, everything becoming awkward. I quickly decided it was my time to leave and turned to my door. As I did, there was a hand on my upper arm, not hard, but just there. I turned to see Hades still staring at me, but he was closer. For another moment, everything was silent. Next thing I knew he had pulled me in close to him and halted just a breath away from putting his lips on mine. I didn’t look away from his eyes. They were thinking, calculating something and then they closed and his lips fell down on mine softly.
I didn’t breath for a moment as his lips melted against mine. Then I realized I was enjoying it and he was about to pull away. My mind and heart acted as one and kicked the crap out of my butt to get it into gear. My arms instinctively shot out and around his neck pulling him back in to finish the kiss. I breathed in heavily against his cheek and lifted myself so that I was standing on my tiptoes, reaching him. Hades reached down and under me, scooping me off of the floor. I didn’t stop kissing him, I wanted him to take me to the bed, I wanted him to kiss me everywhere, to feel my skin. I heard the door click open and then shut again behind me.
Quickly he walked across my entire room, eyes never opening from the kiss and laid me gently on the bed. I gave a small sigh as my body melted into the mattress and I reached up again to pull his head down, but he stopped. His lips moved away from mine and he pushed up, not violently. I opened my eyes to see him looking at me again. No words, just the stare of confliction again. After a moment he seemed to decide what he was going to do and leaned down. I closed my eyes, waiting for the kiss but none came. At least to my lips that is. I felt his warm lips touch the softness of my forehead momentarily and then it was gone. I opened my eyes, shocked to see him standing upright over the side of the bed and beginning to move.  I watched for a second and could have sworn I saw a tear. No! No, no, no! I didn’t want him to go! I wanted him to stay here with me. Before he took his first step I sat up and moved to my knees on the bed. “Wait.” I said softly.
I put a hand on his shoulder to make him stop and he did. “Please, stay with me.” I begged almost in a whisper. His whole face tensed and he turned to me. I smiled my best smile to get him to believe that I really did want him there, and I really did think I was falling in love with him. “Why?” he asked. I looked for an answer. “Because you didn’t have to be kind to me. You didn’t need to look at me with respect and treat me like a Queen. You didn’t have to do anything and yet you did. You tried to protect me and you tried to make me comfortable. And for that I feel as if somehow, I was supposed to be here, with you.” I replied. Hades just looked back at me. Black hair falling everywhere dishelved, his eyes were almost completely emerald again and they sparkled in the dim light of the candles in the chandelier. He looked strong and Godlike standing there and I wanted him so badly. Just to feel my head resting on his chest would have been heavenly.
Hades turned to me completely and took a step forward. He stopped just at the edge of the bed and waited. “Do you really love me?” he asked, wanting a straightforward answer. “I have fallen in love with you Hades. I don’t know when it happened, but just that it did.” I said and put my face dangerously close to his. “And right now, I want to know if you love me too.” I finished and kissed him again. For a moment we just were like that, me sitting up on my knees, Hades on the edge of the bed, but that quickly changed.
I felt him push me backwards gently and hover over my body with his own. His lips began to kiss down my neck and across my collar bone to just where my dress stopped. I closed my eyes and shivered when I felt his breath wash over my skin. He began to kiss along the tip of my dress and finally came back to my lips. I knew I was in for a long night.
