Description             It was the front door shutting that woke Katya up.  Sleepily, she blinked and looked around the living room where she had fallen asleep long ago.  Some stupid hallmark movie was playing quietly for background, something about a cowboy whose first wife died and now he was falling in love again.  Demetrie was laying down perpendicular to Katya, since they were sitting on the couch that turned with the wall.  Two empty bowls of what had been Mac and cheese lay on the coffee table, getting cold especially since Katya had forgotten to turn the thermostat on.  It was dark outside still, but the sound of a chirping bird told her it was at least after 5 am and with some specks of color littering the sky far away, it had to be about 7 am.
Katya, remembering why she had woken, peeked over the back of the large couch just in time to see her father quietly shake his coat off and brush some snow off his shoe.  He didn’t wear the coat because it was cold, witches didn’t get cold, their magic kept them warm enough to hunt naked in the middle of a January with three feet of snow. Leo shook his hands off and set them down on the kitchen island, and then stood there, thinking.  Katya, extremely worried about him now, stood up and, being careful not to wake Demetrie, walked around the couch and into the kitchen silently.  Leo was still deathly quiet when she shuffled up behind him and touched his shoulder.  “Dad?”  She asked.
“Times up, Katya.”  Was all he said, his voice very grave and extremely deadly.  Katya furrowed her brow; it wasn’t like that was the clearest greeting you could make to your loving daughter after one had been out all night.  “What?”  She asked.  “The Council has decided, your time is up.”  This time Leo turned to her, his face was pale white, but his eyes were a vivid blood red.  The way he stood suggested he’d lost a violent battle, and not one he’d only been fighting for one night.  “No.”  Katya whispered and shook her head softly, more like unbelievably.  “You are to make your decision public, tomorrow and after all this time, they want a yes.”  Leo replied, his voice quavering.
“No.”  Katya repeated, still stunned.  “Zane was furious when you refused him like that.  Oh yes, Katya, we know that little stunt he pulled yesterday and with Demetrie right there.  I figured he might try and pull something like that when I wasn’t there. That’s why I let the boy go over anyway when you thought I was seeing his mother.  I thought Zane would try something.  Nevertheless, he was determined to get an action from us last night and he got it.”  Katya was shaking her head now, violently.  “No!  I won’t go!  You can’t make me!”  She shouted, panic growing inside and making her voice high pitched at times.  Her heart began to break.  Her whole life she had spent in fear because of this coven. Her parents ran away because of it, and it brought her back.  She had grown up the past few years in terror, knowing Zane was watching her, waiting.  It hurt her that he was so evil and unforgiving as to force her to marry him, and force her father to give her up like this.  Somehow, he had won.  No matter how hard she tried, he had won.  Everything was for nothing.
A few tears began to well up, only two flowing over.  Leonard looked over his poor daughter, his little girl, and sighed.  “I got you until tomorrow night, so you can still finish some school.  But that’s all I can give you, nothing more.”  Leo’s voice dropped and he stood right in front of his daughter.  “I love you Katya, I love you with all my heart and nothing can change that.  But this Coven needs a woman at his side, to reign him in, and you’re the only one who can do it.”  Leo grabbed her around the arms.  “I love you, my little Kattie, I love you.”  Leo was now starting to tear up.  With a small sob he pulled Katya too him and buried his face in her hair, tears soaking them.  Katya couldn’t help herself; she wrapped her arms around his neck and began to cry as well.  Leo knew she would run, he knew it deep down.  Katya knew that he knew too, that’s why when he gave her until tomorrow night. She knew he meant that time was for a head start.  They could always pull off that she was too busy deciding and getting ready for anyone to see her, so she had all that time to go.  But where?
Demetrie was now waking up, so the two split and Leo walked to his room.  “Kattie?”  Demetrie called as he rubbed his eyes.  “Darling, you have to get home, your mother will be worried.”  She replied and picked him up off the couch.  “Okay, thank you for letting me stay here tonight.”  He smiled and hugged her around the neck when she squatted down to put his coat on him.  Katya was taken by surprise, but she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him back.  “Okay darling, get on home.  And don’t tell your mother about the second coke you had.”  Katya winked and watched him walk out onto their front step, change into a bird, and fly off home.  Katya waited, to make sure he got over the first house, and then closed and locked the door.  With a sigh, she fell against it and closed her eyes.  Today was already starting off pretty crappy.
When Katya climbed into her car to go to school, she found a note in the passenger seat, it was from Cain.

                                              To my Darling Katya,
I hope you had a wonderful night, I’ll see you at school.
With all my love and devotion,
                                                  Cain Chavar

Katya leaned her head back and sighed, it was only yesterday afternoon that she confessed her love to Cain, how long ago that all seemed.  She remembered him running his fingers through her hair, and kissing her neck softly.  Then it hit her.  Cain!  Cain could save her.  She could go to his house and stay there.  But what happened when the witches came for his family?  Where would she go?  Where would they go?  She knew Cain to well to think that he would just send her somewhere, he would go with her.  Katya smiled, he would save her.  She didn’t know how yet, but he would.  They would run, together.
Maybe squealing at 50 mph was not the best entrance to make into a schools parking lot at 8 am in the morning.  Felicia was just getting out of her own car and was completely frightened by Katya’s blue Ford Flex spinning into the spot next to hers.  Felicia screamed when it almost ran into her black jaguar.  “What is up with you??  You almost scratched Nadine!” Felicia ran around to Katya’s driver side and thumped her shoulder.  “Do you know how long it took me to make my father let me have that?  It was my grandfather’s and Zane almost got it instead of me.”  She announced, following Katya to her trunk, waiting for her to get her bag, and walking alongside her inside.  The entire time Katya barely even looked her way.   Felicia looked a little peeved when Katya just breezed by her, not even saying she was sorry or good morning.  “Hello?”  Felicia asked.  Katya entered the school and frantically began to look around for him.  She had seen his car while she spun wildly into her spot, but he was nowhere to be seen.   “Hello?  I’m talking to you.  Are you listening?”  Felicia asked, annoyed now her only friend in the world wasn’t paying any attention.  “Yes, I hear you.  I’m busy right now.  Help me find Cain.”  Katya fired back, it was then that Felicia noticed her eyes were violet again.
“Katya!  Where are your brown eyes?”  She asked in a whisper.  Katya huffed.  “There’s no time for that right now, where is Cain?”  She asked, stomping her foot and turning in circles.  “You mean that kid in all your classes with the really sweet sister?  I thought they usually stayed in the library until bell.”  Felicia said.  Without another word Katya froze time and began to run as quickly as she could to the library.  Felicia followed.  “Didn’t we just say the other day we were going to stop that?”  She asked, huffing and rubbing her calves as they made it to the door.  Felicia unfroze the time when Katya didn’t seem to be listening. “Cain?”  Katya whispered loudly.  Cain was suddenly there, but so was Felicia.  “We have to go!”  Katya blurted, without thinking who was around at the time. “You’ve got to get my away.  He’ll kill me if you don’t.”  Felicia’s eyes bugged out, as big as a cow.  Allison, who had followed her brother, did the same.
“Katya.  What are you doing?”  Felicia hissed and followed her as the two melted into the rows of books, so no one else could listen.  “Zane gave the council no more time. I have to make it public by tomorrow or they will kill me.” Cain pulled Katya close.  Allison spoke up now.  “Why would they kill you?” Katya didn’t speak; she was too into the embrace with Cain.  While the two enjoyed each other right then, Felicia answered her. “Ancient Laws dictate that if there is no other eligible female in the coven, then the one who turns him away is to be killed.  Since the Coven Master cannot have her, no one can.”  She explained and Allison nodded.
Katya never heard Felicia; her whole world was busy now.  Just touching Cain again made her dizzy with love.  Looking in his grey eyes and running her fingers through his hair was like heaven for her.  Cain just looked into her violet ones, entranced in their mystery.  “Let’s run away.”  Katya finally spoke after the long and lovely moment was over.  Cain just nodded, then closed his eyes and leaned down, placing his full lips on her.  Katya pushed her fingers through his hair on the back of his head and pulled him closer.  Cain just pulled her shoulders closer so there was nothing between them anymore.  Allison finally coughed and Felicia nudged Katya in the back.  “Cain, we can’t go anywhere right now without hunting again.  It’s been a long time, and if you’re going to be on the run you can’t be leaving a trail.”  Allison suggested.  Felicia finally recognized Cain.  “You’re the Vampire!”  She squealed and lurched back as if he suddenly had a force field.
Katya recognized the danger of Felicia knowing now, not just for them, but for Felicia as well.  “No!” she reached forward and grabbed Felicia by the forearm and pulled her closer, covering her mouth.  “Felicia, you must say nothing.  You can’t breathe a word of this.  I think it’s time for you to leave, so that you don’t know any more in case they find out you know.  But before you go, you have to promise me you won’t say a word to anyone.”  Katya looked into her best friends deeply green eyes, then let go of her mouth.  Felicia’s eyes just darted between Cain and Katya, resting on Allison once or twice.  “I want to help.”  She finally stated.  “No!  If the Coven were to find out, both of us plus Cain and his family, would be killed.  You can’t have any part of this, for your safety as well.”  Katya reminded her and took a step to Cain, who took her shoulders and pulled her back closer to his chest.
“You’re my best and only friend Katya; I can’t let anything happen to you.  I don’t care what your choices are, but I can’t lose you just to something my cousin did.”  Felicia stated.  “Zane is your cousin?”  Cain asked, shocked.  Felicia nodded, “We share a grandfather through my mother. They don’t like to consider me as such though, since our mothers were sisters.  That right there gives me no Coven Master claims and are therefore useless and harmless to Zane and Kirsten.”  She explained.  “I want to help.  Even if it’s just housing you for a few days when you have nowhere else to go.   I want to at least help you escape tonight.”  Katya looked to her friend, and suddenly broke with Cain and wrapped her arms around Felicia, hugging her tightly.  Felicia hugged her back, holding a sniffle in. “You are the most wonderful friend a witch could have.”  She exclaimed and kissed her cheek.
After a moment of trying to dry eyes, Katya looked back to Cain, still holding Felicia’s hand.  “We have to go now so we can pack and plan.  Zane won’t even be thinking of trying to find me since he thinks I’m in school.  We’ll have to leave before 3:30 though, since he’ll be at my house as soon as he can.”  Cain nodded.  “I’ll go with you and Allison can take the car back to my house and get a room ready for you there.”  Allison shook her head defiantly.  “Danielle isn’t going to like Katya there, and she won’t listen to me.  Donald doesn’t like me that much either.  The two of them will listen to you, but I have no hope.”  Cain gave a small curse.  “I don’t want to leave her.”  He said to Allison.
Katya took his hand.  “Don’t worry, Allison can go with me and take me to your house when I’m done packing.  You go ahead.”  She reasoned and titled her violet eyes to look directly into his.  “Fine, but be safe. I love you.”  Cain said quietly.  “I love you too.”  Katya replied and wrapped her arms back around him, kissing him passionately. Allison sighed and took both girls hands, dragging them out the doors.  “We’ll have to take Felicia’s car.”  Allison said.  “Oh!  Because people would notice my car going through the neighborhood.  Good thinking.”  Katya said and climbed in the passenger seat as Allison sat in the back. “No, hers is way nicer
