A5 art cover journal with 96 blank pages front and back, and a print of my original drawing "Yukio Mishima as Saint Sebastian" on the cover; hand-sawn with a coptic style stitch.

Yukio Mishima is Japan's most celebrated author who is known for his avant-garde, aesthetic works and his ritual suicide in 1970. For this renewed item I got inspiration from a couple of his the-most-known works, Confessions of a Mask and The Temple of the Golden Pavilion. The black hairy paper that I used for the inside front and back covers came from his mention of seductiveness of mature men's underarm hair in the former, which is considered as his autobiographical novel. Gold colour on the covers is for the latter that is narrated by a son of Buddhist priest who had a strong obsession with the power of beauty in the pavilion called Kinkaku-ji, which urges him to destroy it; based on the burning of the temple in Kyoto by a young Buddhist acolyte in 1950. The original drawing itself also came from Confessions of Mask, in which he described his first sexual behaviour was with Guido Reni's painting Saint Sebastian. He was captured by its brutality and elegance, later he published a photograph collection that was made up of pictures of himself by Japanese photographer Eikō Hosoe, including one showing him enacting the scene that I got an inspiration for the work. Mishima is a controversial figure for his suicide and political activities aside from his writings, but his status as an author is beyond dispute in and out of Japan; a movie Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters (directed by Paul Schrader, produced by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas) won the award for Best Artistic Contribution at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival, and his works are translated into many languages. I considered him as a person who was obsessed by beauty that he first saw and pursued it for the life time, had plenty of talents and extraordinary sense of beauty that killed him.
