Stefania and Tony Melani entered the lobby of the Grand Hotel. They had chosen this lovely hotel in the Alps to go on their honeymoon. At the entrance, a bellboy greeted them and showed them the way to the front desk. When they spotted the receptionist, they were pleasantly surprised. The receptionist was their friend Martha, with whom they had lost contact a few months before their wedding.
“Good day Martha!” Stefania greeted her. “Can we check in?”

“Stefania! What a lovely surprise! And Tony! Welcome to the Grandhotel!” Martha answered.

“I didn’t know you were working here. When did you get the job?” Tony asked.

“I got it just recently!”

“You could have informed us. Just disappearing like that is not nice for a friend, you know!” Stefania teased Martha.

“I’m really sorry. But after Hermione disappeared, I was so occupied with the search and then with finding a job, that I lost contact with you.” Martha apologized. She couldn’t tell them what really happened to Hermione as they wouldn’t understand, or even worse, blame her. Stefania and Tony grew silent.

Tony was the first to speak again: “So, you don’t know anything new about Hermione?” he asked sadly. Martha just shook her head. At this gesture, Stefania lowered her head, a tear running down her cheek. Tony embraced his wife.

“Listen, friends. Let’s check both of you in now. We can meet this afternoon, when my shift is over.” Martha proposed. Both agreed and Martha finished the check in.

In the afternoon, Martha, Stefania and Tony met again in the Lobby. After a short report by the newlyweds about their activity during the day – having a stroll through the nearby town and a long walk around at the lake – they asked Martha how she got here.

“After Hermione’s disappearance, I took a job as a receptionist in a small hotel in Italy. It was temporary for the first few months only. And even though I did a good job, they didn’t give me a full contract when the trial period ended. Luckily, I found this job offer here in a newspaper and finally got the job. I had to move, yes! But the Hotel gives me a room to live in.” Martha made up a story.

Tony nodded, while Stefania had a smirk on her face. Then she addressed her hubby. “Tony dear, it’s hot! Can you get us a cold drink, please?” she begged and gave him a kiss.

Tony grinned “Of course!” He kissed Stefania back and left for the Bar.

With Tony out of the way, Stefania couldn’t wait to ask Martha: “Martha, how comes you’re out of your lamp? Has someone finally wished you free?”

“Not yet! But since I granted the third wish of my last master, I’m no longer totally bound to the lamp. Now, I can leave the lamp for twelve hours. But after this period has elapsed, I’m sucked back into the lamp. Still, it’s a big improvement.”

“I see. Do you have an idea why you got this freedom?” Stefania asked.

“Maybe because I turned my last master into genie?”

Stefania gulped. “Did you twist his wish to turn him into a genie?”

“I did. But he deserved it. He was a mean person.” Martha answered hastily.

“Where is his bottle now?”

“I hide his bottle away. It’s better if he isn’t released from his prison.”

“I see!” Stefania answered. “And where’s your lamp now?”

“Oh, it’s down there, on a pedestal!” Martha explained and pointed to a corner of the lobby.

When Tony returned to the table, Stefania changed the topic. They talk about them living together now and how happy they were. Time flew when finally Martha glanced at the clock. Her 12 hours were nearly over. “Is it already that late? I’m sorry, but I have to go now. We can meet tomorrow again.” She proposed. Tony and Stefania agreed.
Martha left the table and returned to her lamp. She took a look around so nobody would see her. Then she turned into smoke and returned to her lamp for the night.
