Description It was Martha’s turn to do the weekly chores in the flat she shared with David. The bathroom was already cleaned, and now she would continue in the kitchen. With a blink of her eyes, the cleaning agent and a cleaning cloth hovered out of the cupboard. Another blink and the cleaning agent was applied to the cloth. One more blink and the cloth magically cleaned the surfaces of the kitchen. Martha spun around like she was dancing, pulling her smoke tail behind her.
At that moment, the door opened and David entered the kitchen. “Martha, what are you doing?”

“It’s my turn to clean the flat.” Martha replied.

“I know that. I just wonder why you don’t do it the... well, traditional way.” David sounded strangely puzzled.

“I’m a genie. I can use my magic for it. It’s easier that way.” Martha answered.

“Still, it looks strange to me. As well as you hovering around with a smoke tail instead of legs” David looked down as he spoke these words.

“Listen! I’m a genie and it feels natural for me to hover around.” Martha felt her anger rise.

“Really? Because at the hotel, you seem to be pretty comfortable with your legs.” David teased Martha.

“Do you think M. Sprüngli would let me work there if I would ‘hover around?’ I have to act that way at the job, but I’m not happy with it!” Martha shouted.

“I don’t believe you!” David’s response was quick as a shot.

“How about you make a wish and find out what kind of a genie I am.” Martha teased David with a sarcastic smirk on her face.

“I’m not that stupid. You would most likely twist my wish. That’s what evil genies do.”

“How dare you!?!” Martha really hoped David would state a wish right now so she could twist it. But then, she realized that this would only prove his point. Instead she took a deep breath and cooled down. “You think, I’m an evil djinn? Maybe I should move out of the flat?” Martha sounded offended.

"That's not what I want. I just want to know what kind of person my flat-mate is. At the hotel, I got to know you as a warm and very carrying woman. I didn’t know you were a genie back then, though. But your behavior just now seems to prove what I’m most afraid of.” David explained.

“And that would be?” Martha nagged.

“Since I learned about you being a genie, I did some research. And I found out that genies tends to twist their masters' wishes in a non-benevolent way. I hope you are not, but I’m afraid that you might be such an evil genie too. If yes I can’t trust you as a flatmate.” David replied.

Martha’s mouth popped open. She was about to protest but instead, she thought about how she had granted the many wishes of her masters. Many victims of her wishes deserved what she did. But it was also true that she found a great satisfaction, if not to say joy, in twisting the wishes. Like Sami said, twisting wishes was kind of normal for genies. Martha lowered her eyes to avoid David’s gaze. “So what do you suggest?” she asked.

“How about you don’t use your magic for one week?” David suggested. “This will show how much of a genie you already are.”

“Is that a wish?” Martha asked.

“No, it’s not. I’m just curious if you can do it.” David teased her.

“How dare you!?!” Martha replied angry again. “Alright, I’ll take your challenge. If I make it, you will accept me as a genie! No more demands for using my legs if I don’t want to or for doing stuff the ‘manual way’. You agree?” Both shook hands. “Now that this is settled, let’s finish the kitchen.”

Martha was about to set the magic cleaning cloth in motion again, when David said: “Aren’t you forgetting something?”

“Crap!” Martha gnarled. She took the cleaning cloths and finished the job manually.

A blond woman entered the grand hotel, dragging a suitcase behind her. With her plain and rather cheap clothes she looked a bit out of place in such a posh hotel. Nevertheless, Martha greeted her with professional kindness. “Good day, Miss. Welcome to the Grandhotel. How can I help you.”

“My name is Ivanna Petroskaja. I’d like to rent your cheapest room for two nights.“ the woman introduced herself with a strong, east-European accent.

“Alright. Please fill out this form” Martha passed her a ledger with the registration form and a pen. “That would be 50 Franken per night. Do you want breakfast too?”

“No, thank you, only the room.” The woman replied.

“Is there anything else I can do for you?” Martha inquired.

“Yes, there is. Is my sister Svetlana working as a maid at this very hotel?” Ivanna asked.

Martha had trouble not wrinkling up her face. Ivanna was the sister of her nemesis Svetlana. Martha wondered if her troubles had just doubled. “I think she’s currently cleaning the rooms somewhere upstairs. Shall I leave her a note?”

“That would be nice. I’ll be waiting for her in the lobby.”

“As you wish.” Martha gave the bellhop a sign to lead Ivanna to her room.

I haven't the foggiest but as long as her lamp is at David's it should be okay.

True. So it appears to be a story without genie magic? Or does it?
