Resource Type: Manga template for Yen Press Talent Search

Paper Size: Custom Measurements by Yen Press

Resolution: 600 DPI

File Size: 7 MB

Specifications: Taken from the outline at Yen Press Talent Search .

They gave specs for live area and document size, and emailed me clarifying points on trim and bleed when I asked. They also updated their own image afterward, so everything should be squared away now: [link]

- Full Bleed Size / Outer Margin / Bleed:
7 x 10 3/8 in.

- Trimmed Size / Outer Frame / Outside Border:
6 3/4 x 10 1/8 in.

- Safe Zone / Inner frame / Live Area:
4 3/4 x 8 1/8 in.

Personal Notes: Quickly done. See above for issues relating to measurements.

Use: You may use these to overlay them over a digital file if you'd like. I usually just use theses types of templates to check myself. I overlay it and the lessen the opacity of the template to see where everything lies with respect to printing.

General Regions:

Line frames, known as borders, tell you how much of the paper space you can use for your manga images. Artists rely on these boundary lines to contain their drawings and avoid having their work cropped out when it’s published. Both American comic book artist and Japanese manga artists incorporate their own standard measurement sizes. You need to be aware of several border measurements, and you should indicate them on your paper even before you pick up your pencil to draw. --Manga for Dummies by Kensuke Okabayashi

Bleed: The outer edges. They're necessary to protect you against printing errors. The full bleed size is generally what you are going to turn in to your publisher or company for printing, whether you're doing business cards, brochures, magazines, or comics. It's the total size of your document.

Trimmed Size: The relative size of the final product. The trim size denotes the size of the product after it has undergone print processing (trimming). It roughly corresponds to what your comic page will look like in print. (There is some margin for printing error though, which is why the bleed exists to protect you.)

Safe Area: This is the bull's eye zone. It's super safe. It's where you keep the most important content, like important texts and dialogue. It's like an inner protective shell protecting the readable content from being accidentally cropped off during printing. NOTE: You can draw outside of this area; it's utilized mostly for keeping speech towards the middle of the page.

So. For people who use MangaStudio,
Would this be correct?:

Bleed/Page Size: 7.000 x 10.375
Trim/Finish Frame: 6.075 x 10.125
Safe Zone/ Basic Frame: 4.075 X 8.125

? Sorry to bother, I've just had problems with printing and I want to make sure it's all correct. ^^ If you're unsure then that's completely fine.~

So if I wanted to do a rewrite (redraw) of an old comic I once did, I would need to expand it to 32 pages, and keep it within that small space.D: Charming prospects.

You could do that, Sarah~ ^^

thank you so much! this example helped me a lot! i was always worried about printing, now i'm more confident!

This also helps to clarify how I use the template: [link]

^^ It's really not so bad once you actually see how it works, is it? As for finding a scanner, that's...hmm. Are there are local hardware stores that sell used equipment? Maybe your parents could help you look on eBay and a local craigslist? Some basic scanner go pretty cheap. All you need is something that scans at least 600dpi.

OHTERWISE, it's pretty cheap to grab a CD or usb thumb drive, shove your pages into your satchel, and go to a local Staples or print store. Lots of mailing places like Kinko's and UPS also have scanners open to the public. They can scan them in at 600 dpi and put them onto your CD or usb drive. I would ask for .TIFF files instead of PDFs or JPEGs. TIFF is easier to work with and lossless image format.

Ahhh, did you figure out a nice way for you then? Good! And no, I wasn't at this time planning on it. Too much school and part-time stuff at the moment to fit it in. :< It's a sad thing because I'd love to set aside some extra time to comic!

Well, good luck! (And thank you. I try to get better and learn all the time, so it's nice to know it pays off even a little.) Winter break isn't much of a break for me. XD I would love to try and make some time to balance such a project... I have some cute ideas, even. X< If I get a few chapters ahead on my other project, maybe... I wish I didn't have so much stuff in line for the New Year! Aw, well.

Mino-Detechun [2011-12-20 01:53:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!! Um do we draw on paper and then scan it.Then we put it within the live area? Sorry the confusion. :C

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to Mino-Detechun [2011-12-21 04:31:12 +0000 UTC]

That is one method. There are many ways. Lots of people draw traditionally, then scan, then crop and resize, using layers to overlay the full-trim-safe areas for visual confirmation of "the plan" of all the art, text, and sound effects. (I actually do it this way. Maybe I could show sometime? It's very easy to do. ^^)

You can also opt for a completely digital approach to these things, using the computer to draft, ink, etc. This is definitely cost-effective and attractive for many artists! ^_^

HeyTayHolt In reply to Mino-Detechun [2011-12-24 04:07:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, in the end, it depends on what's at your disposal. What sort of materials/software are you working with?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mino-Detechun In reply to HeyTayHolt [2012-02-10 16:06:22 +0000 UTC]

I currently use various tools like, for the paper I use Deleter B4 paper and for the line art I mainly use the Tachikawa New Manga Pen School G (I.C.). For inks I use deleter ink 4 and 5 with a pen nib and pen holder Dx and for the boarders I use a random pen and for the giant inks I use a pentel standard brush pen-medium tip and the screentones- (I.C) + (deleter) The rest is just random art pens that I collect. Does this help?? Dx xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to Mino-Detechun [2012-02-11 07:00:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it tells me you're a traditional artist! (Wheee! Go inks! Inks are awesome!) Do you use a scanner to scan in your work? If so, what program do you prefer to edit the scan and adjust the image/put texts on/etc? ^_^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mino-Detechun In reply to HeyTayHolt [2012-02-11 18:28:11 +0000 UTC]

(xD Inks ARE awesome!!) xD Um I currently don't have a scanner because I wasn't able to afford one yet because I (wasted) sent my money on a printer Dx and that scanner was too small and then it broke because, it would't connect to the internet. Well, what program is best to use? xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to Mino-Detechun [2012-02-24 03:59:47 +0000 UTC]

Aww, too bad. Scanners are sort of one of those things you need for traditional works. As for programs, it depends on the person. There are some really good free optinos (like Gimp) out there. ^^

Mino-Detechun In reply to HeyTayHolt [2012-02-25 05:08:02 +0000 UTC]

xD ok Thanks I'm planning to get myself a scanner next month : D Is there a scanner that fits a B4 paper size?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to Mino-Detechun [2012-02-25 06:02:11 +0000 UTC]

I believe HP carried one that runs around $400? And Mustek has a brand that scans large-format... I'd have to look for them, though. You could try googling.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Mino-Detechun In reply to HeyTayHolt [2012-02-28 18:51:52 +0000 UTC]

superSHMUCK [2011-05-30 18:39:30 +0000 UTC]

So I'm a bit confused; do you have to keep your drawing within the red, or can it go out to the pale yellow?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HeyTayHolt In reply to superSHMUCK [2011-06-06 13:26:23 +0000 UTC]

Out to pale yellow is what you the reader will actually see once it's all processed. If you have a drawing that goes out to the edge of the paper, it bleeds out to the red to protect against printing errors. This might help show what it means: [link]

HeyTayHolt In reply to O-hai-Derkomai [2010-12-02 21:33:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. That's why I popped an email to them; but this is what they say they want. :>

O-hai-Derkomai In reply to HeyTayHolt [2010-12-03 23:19:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah... It's just... Yeah. XD

So, recently, they said the trim margin is inside this template (between the edge, and the Live Area) and that, yes, they're planning on cropping it as if it was going off to a real printing press.

It's all so weirrrd. Cut off the edges of this template, and what you get is a page smaller than the size of the Yen+ printed magazine. I guess they don't plan on releasing a printed version of the magazine on a later date?
