Stunning use of softness and light. The subtle changes in the relatively flat scene of grey work extremely nicely with the vague landscape; aspects such as the horizon line and the distinction between the sky and the sea are portrayed simplistically though adequately. This way of expression through flat tone gives a mystical, surreal feel to the piece, almost as if it were a void; the sky blank and the sea nothing.
The smoke that entrails off from the unclear landscape gives the impression that perhaps life is present in the far distance. The way it dissipates into the enveloping white conveys a sense of infinity and isolation to the scene; it is as if the blankness of the world swallows all things that come into contact with it, drowning them out.
Just barely recognizably, the plants and figures and land comes into view, very subtly, gently soothing in from the blank sea - truly dream-like, a small beacon of reassurance admist a void of nothing.
Awesome minimalism, amazing shot.
