I stayed in a little hotel in Sankt Goar in front of the ferry boat stop! Beautiful!!

Haha, so, I grew up in Braubach (Marksburg) and now living in Mainz. My parents are still living in Braubach. So when I visit them I always take the train along the Rhine. Its really nice. Next week I will get visit from a friend from UK. I will show him Mainz and Braubach. I guess I will take a few pics too.

add it looks like they are trying to keep it from falling into ruins. I love castles. I am familiar with many of the distinctive ones. But I'm going to have to add this one to my list.

I am familiar with most English and French Castles and I am pretty good with German ones. It is when we head into Eastern Europe that I start to fall down. Although I do know some eastern castles. I was surprised I was not familiar with 'this' German Castle. Shameful.I must restudy German and Polish castles.

Note: My love of castles is so strong that I capitalized Castles in the first line without thinking about. Don't know why everyone else doesn't love castles. Must something wrong with them.

I love castles too and in northern Italy there are some of 'em... Especially along the austrian border... Some of them are said to be haunted...
I am pretty familiar with castles in France and Germany but I'd like to visit also the ones in Scotland...

There's one you should be able to look up online, apparently some tourists took a photo of a window and a silhouette of a figure in prayer showed up when it was developed. They believed that it was St. Mark watching over the burg.

Another story was that the castle was named the Marksburg after an immense hooded figure wielding a sword (presumably St. Mark) appeared in a flash of light before the lord of the castle and told him to fall to his knees.

...I want to say that it was one of the counts of Katzenelenbogen... or however that's spelled... but the legend might be older than that... although they lived in the Burg Katz... which may have been a nickname for the Marksburg...

LOL, ANYWAY, there's a few stories for you

Wow I didn't really know these stories... Thank you for sharing, pal!!
That interests me a lot since I live in Venice and St. Mark is very very important in my city!!

When I visited the castles in the Rhine zone I stayed in a hotel that was opposite to Burg Katz!!

Again, thank you so much!!

If you don't mind me asking, are you Venitian? and if so, how did you come to speak English so well?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hellslord In reply to SwanBurglar [2012-06-25 17:37:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm venetian... Well, I don't live exactly in Venice; I live in the mainland but I work there everyday...

Thank you!! I think my english is nothing special so I'm particularly glad to read your comment... I've studied english for several years (something like 7 years), I often watch movies in english and my job helps a little: I'm a computer tech so the biggest part of manuals are in english...

That's fantastic! I'm sure it's nothing for you to go up to Venice for the day, but for me... the idea of living in the Most Serene Republic, walking down streets where Vivaldi, Casanova, and Titan once tread... (grins like a fool)

And yes, you do speak very well. I hope you count yourself lucky to live where you are. I'm so jealous. Do many people speak English in Italy, or are you an exception? I recently went to France and found that it was not difficult to get around (though I do speak a LITTLE French)

I must say that living and working in Venice is pretty difficult... It's a beautiful city, but it's not so big and streets (called "calli") are very tight... Especially during february (carnival) and september (regatta storica) the city is flooded by tourists and it can be pretty frustrating and annoying for "residents"... But it's "part of the game"

Well, among young people the english language is known, but at a very basic level... Advanced speakers can be found but not so often... By the way, French people are really worse than italian people: they hate to speak foreign languages... I think they're sure that everybody should understand french...

I definitely got that impression while i was there. What little French I spoke seemed to put a bad taste in their mouth. Apparently I speak with a Quebec accent.
Why do the young people speak any English at all? Is it a fad? I've heard that more than a few countries have that phenomenon.
That's unfortunate about the streets. In reality is there a lot of canals? or is it mostly roads?

I don't speak french, but I speak a little german... I like that language, even if it's pretty difficult...
I don't really know... Speaking english is very important nowadays, or at least this is what I think!!

Venice is a big number of little islands connected each other with bridges... Many bridges... Over 200... And in every little island there are a certain number of "streets"...

Thank you for your
