Description
If you live in Toronto, you’ve probably heard that the TTC’s iconic Canadian Light Rail Vehicle (CLRV) streetcars are nearing the end of their 40-plus year run. They will be officially retired after December 29, 2019. But in the weeks leading up to that point, the TTC is giving them a proper sendoff.
Here, CLRV 4081 waits at a red light at the intersection of Queen St. East and Sherbourne St. in downtown Toronto. 4081 and several of its sister units are wearing special stickers as part of their farewell tour.
At the time this photo was taken, the TTC was running CLRV as extras on the 501 so people could get their last rides and photos of these iconic light rail vehicles. I’ve always enjoyed riding and photographing these relics, and I’ll be trying to hunt them down until their very last day in revenue service.
Despite the sad news of their impending retirement, there is some good news. Several CLRVs have already been preserved by North American transit museums, and the TTC plans to keep at least one CLRV and one ALRV around for their historical collection.
