Description Now that it has just become the New Year 2016, it is time to burn the Christmas tree.  Once the clock strikes midnight we flare the year in with last year's gaily decorated, but now dried out tree.  As my family and friend took on the job in the back yard's fire pit, they have a chance to share the experience and make a new memory.

This was my wife's idea, but she faded quickly after the ball dropped in New York City, USA and left it to the kids.  My job was to record the event, in the cold, and with my news background I managed to get the coverage right out to share.

Feel free to download, just give me photo credit.

I have challenged some of my friends to a January 1, 2016 photo day, in my group "photoswithstory".  Anyone wanting to join in the fun, post on my group site in the folder, New Years.

Nice! We chop our tree up and stack it to use on the fire throughout the year. The needles are great for adding to the compost in small amounts and the small branches make good firelighters. The photo is great - really captures the moment.

For a number of years, we would have a braai (open fire barbeque) on New Year's Eve, and then, in the morning, the kids would blow up the embers, and we would cook porridge and bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Family traditions are important, part of what keeps us together - common narrative, and all that.

Great photograph Eugene, the lighting is so very beautiful, the way it plays on the faces. I wish we were allowed to do this where Ilive but no such luck, too many houses I suppose. Thanks for submitting to the group, much appreciated.
