Description Pastels
14 x 16½"
2001

The background is made up of many cross-hatched layers, each layer completely covered with the orange and reds of the girls' skin tones, a blue layer from their dresses and a final few green layers from bright green to the darkest green I have. Every two layers lightly blended with fingers so the colors below show through. The final two layers of darkest green lightly blended. The girls done in reverse, starting with greens building up to the orange, reds and yellows of their skin tones.

It's beautiful...Such a lovely captured moment!!!....Dare I say...much more intimate than a photograph!..Pastels have so much luminosity,especially on the dark background

Thank you for saying how you did it.It really is beautiful!..Now I know why my pastel pictures tend to look flat....You have made me want to have another try,,,,It will probably never be seen!

Thank you, Patricia.

The girl in front is the niece of a friend. The girl behind her is her friend. My friend was a patron of my art. He owned 7 of my originals. He took his life in 2004.

You got me thinking, so I've included the technique in artist's comments.

I like how you captured the playfulness! The additional green leaf in their hair really shows the freedom of mind you have in childhood! I miss the days when I could turn the garden into a secret hideout!
Well done!

Thank you very much. It is possible to carry that "freedom of mind" into adulthood.

Love the beautiful lightfall on these girls, and their pose is so dynamic! Very interesting image, I keep looking at it. The near-symmetry is also such a nice element.
