Description Apologies if you've gotten this image a million times in your deviation announcements. Ugh. I uploaded this earlier today and Fev pointed out some problems with it that I wanted to fix. But when I fixed it, I think I screwed up something and the whole deviation wouldn't show up anywhere. So I deleted it and am resubmitting. Bah.

Not sure if I fixed everything Fev mentioned, but I think I'm done with this. Really am not in the mood to work on it anymore.

This version is a little brighter than the last one since I think some of the detail was lost in blackness.

Anyhoo, nothing much to say about it. Another costume thing that was floating around in my head.

I used some textures from [link] for the walls. It's the first time I've used photo textures like that. I had fun doing it, but I kind of missed the feeling of making my own. There's something really soothing and calming about doing mindless detail work. Does anyone else enjoy doing that?

Squee! Pure awesomeness. I love the tones of her skin, the warms against the cool teals and greens. Wicked cool! I like her armor outfit. Very cool work! ^^

Hello! Thanks!

By the way, I met Summoner Lenne at AX this year, and she mentioned you. I hadn't known that you guys knew each other. She said your art is beautiful, and I told her I heartily agree. Heh.

The stock textures work, but I think I prefer your textures a lot more! When you do them, they match really well.

I love how all of your pieces seem to have a deep sense of narrative. Each one could spin out into a whole comic series or something.

Thanks, Toji! I do have stories for most of my drawings, but they're just little scenarios in my head, and I don't expect (or want) them to be explained to people. I don't like it when art comes with instructions, you know? So I'd rather have people come up with their own stories or explanations for things.

Fantabulous :3 hehe. I actually didn't get pinged repeatedly, but hell I do it to everybody all the time so I never mind anyway (really its sort of silly how they keep it that way... I suppose they have their reasons ). I definitely like this brighter, it doesn't look too bright and we get to see more of the detail on that right shoulder and arm.

I'll have to check out those texture links.. I for one, do not like making my own textures.. my computer hates the lag (I cant even use the smudge tool if i wanted to) and I get bored of it... especially clouds these days I find myself using shortcuts more and more often with stuff I just don't want to paint anymore.

Costume design is amazing as always, and all the stuff I said over at Plag!

Oh, good. I was afraid this would show up, like three times or something in people's bins.

Oh, the right shoulder details weren't in the other version. They were part of what Fev said was wrong with the pic. So I added more to them.

Ack! I love drawing clouds. I used to hate doing them, but once I figured out how, they're one of my faves to do. Especially big squishy cumulus ones...

Thanks, Kimaya!

Was just thinkin' 'bout you, been missing your arts.
Looks great but I do agree with you on the whole texture thing. To me it's noticeable that it's just...different. With the woman and the clothes you can see/feel the brushstrokes and what not, the textures are a little...just there. Don't get me wrong it's still an awesome piece

Aww, thanks.

Yeah, it looks a little different to me too, even after I futzed around with it and blended it a bit. It's just not the same. Plus, call me crazy, but I really do love doing textures and details.

This feels really solid, I was looking forward to seeing this one done .

I can't say I really really enjoy doing the detail work in a calming sense, after awhile I start to feel unproductive since details can take quite a lot more time than I usually feel like I have - but there are some times when you get into a good groove and it flows really well. I think it just depends on my general mood at the time (and exhaustion! hah).

Anyway, thanks for sharing with us all.

Thanks, Yrindale. This one was unexpected in many ways. It was originally a fantasy themed pic. I had no idea it would end up like this.

I think the vast majority of time spent on each of my pics is probably on detail/texture, although that might not always be apparent. Actually, I hope it's not apparent. I wouldn't want the details to detract from the overall image. But I do so love doing them. Seriously, I could sit for hours just squiggling away if I let myself.

cmalidore In reply to hakubaikou [2007-06-15 04:32:46 +0000 UTC]

What'd you think of using the photo textures? Until I started to use more grunge brushes I started to use them a lot on some smaller portions of my pictures for underlaying textures and what not for a bit of substance - it never really felt right at first, but after awhile I found it to start adding to the pictures in a good way.

And naw, I wouldn't say it's always apparent in your pieces, but what is apparent is that there's usually a quality - perhaps its a quality of love of the arts and doing this work in general - but a quality that gets shown and I think those details are a big portion of that.... so I wouldn't say we see the details as details but as a flavor of enjoyment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hakubaikou In reply to cmalidore [2007-06-15 05:20:50 +0000 UTC]

I think they're great if you're in a rush or if you're not in the mood to do them from scratch.

Grunge brushes? Are they very different from the standard brushes that Photoshop comes with? I mostly just use the brushes from Photoshop. I have a few that I made myself, but that's about it. For most of my textures I don't use too many special brushes. I usually use a combination of the lasso tool, smudge tool, and dodge/burn. It takes a bit longer, but like I said, I actually really enjoy just sitting there mindlessly working away on texturing.

I'm glad it's not too apparent. I always hope that the details would work on more of an unconscious or maybe subliminal level. You know, a non-artist viewer would hopefully feel it more than see it. And yes, "flavor" is a good way of putting it! ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

cmalidore In reply to hakubaikou [2007-06-15 06:39:55 +0000 UTC]

You can even do a quick search for "grunge brushes" for an example... effectively their brushes that give that dirty texture. I think the satan worm picture I just did used a lot of them all over the full piece at a low opacity, and it makes it all gritty with very little effort.

I'm growing addicted to the damn things hehehe.

I am growing further and further apart from the standard brushes as I learn to develop my own - it's actually pushed my learning very far in such a little amount of time. Though I need to weed em down a little soon, I have a lot that I just don't use much of anymore.

But yes I think the detail point is a good one - in the end it's really important that the viewer see's the image as one cohesive picture as opposed to bits and pieces decorating a bland picture. You have a really good happy medium I think, and the details you provide (or flavor, since it makes sense) really help that .
