Description lol uploading things during class to avoid crappy internet woes, NICE. >3>

So I've started taking screenshots of the movie for reference during my realism practice. (Because now I MUST FUCKING MASTER IT FJDSKLFJDSKL) And as I'm taking caps of 'Paul,' Christopher's friend, I suddenly see he's got this big ol' booboo on his face/neck. Missing plate bits and everything! D8 I hadn't seen it till now. Although I did notice something amiss the first few movie viewings when they showed the close-up of him pleading Koobus for his life...

Man, observing all the prawns from an analytical mindset, trying to distinguish all the parts that are 'skin' (there's quite a lot, actually, in places were I didn't expect) and the parts that are plated you see A LOT that you just wouldn't otherwise. I'm literally just sitting here staring at them whenever they come on screen watching every major and minute movement they make and trying to decode how they fit together and function internally. Basically musculature, where plates fit together and their rotational axises, the width and breath of limb movement, stuff like that. And I'm fairly certain they have a skeletal system of some kind since so much of them ISN'T made of plates. There are HUGE portions of just skin and flesh that would need some kind of under-structure to support them...

If I ever get a satisfactory (TO ME, let me emphasize) grip of realistic prawns I'll have to make a reference image for all the different areas of skin and plate, if nothing else just for me. Dem prawns are really, really gosh darned complicated. o_o

Ugh, the details to their anatomy are amazing, though. I'm falling in love all over again!

District 9 and this cap of the movie © Neill Blomkamp and whoever else it's supposed to belong to.

they might have a skeletal system, but in that scene where wicus cuts his prawnified-thumb off, there was no bone. my guess is that they only have a spine and maybe some tiny little ribs, that's ALL! i know they have a spine, because the movements of their heads can be very swift, unlike all invertebrates, who move their heads extremely slowly (especially ants, they tend to just move their entire bodies upward to tilt their mighty jaws skyward) hope this helps!

Their hands seem less jointed and more just muscle, that's true; considering how they curled and seemed almost tentacle-like. But their arms and legs couldn't very well support their weight (they're pretty heavy, judging from how they sound landing on things) without bones. They don't have enough tightly jointed carapace to rely solely on that for support, not to mention with our gravity it would be pretty hard to move like that and they're darn spry buggers.

I never got this, so were Christopher and Paul... gay for each other or something? o.O

lmao I doubt it. In some commentary it was said that Paul was one of the few Christopher trusted, thus why he was helping him collect the stuff; but it seemed by how they said it it was more of a leader/follower type relationship. That, and I'm pretty Paul was a bit more stupid than Chris so probably wouldn't get the concept, anyway. xD

I'm going with bestest friends, myself. c:

Bawww, Paul and Christopher = <3

Though, does he have some sort of... things sticking out of his plates?

God I want to hug whoever designed these things.

Why yes he does! I wondered when I first saw it if he was just really spikey but I heard on some extra feature that they're actually spark-plugs and stuff like that that he attached to himself and looking again, sure enough they are! xD I wonder how he could have done that without hurting himself. o_O

I agree though, hugs for the concept artists! They did a great job. <3

Oh, spark-plugs! Glad to finally know what those things were. Maybe they don't have much feeling in the plates, like fingernails? Or perhaps it's just a piercing type-thing to them. In any case, he was pretty bad-ass and I felt pretty bad when he got killed. ;-; Especially because Christopher and him were so close.

Yes I had seen some of it too though I didn't notice his neck plate being so messed up! D8 Poor guyyy *huggles him back to life*
You know what's funny, in that close up where he pleads for his life and he's all like owie ow owww... That scar on his eye was so shiny at first I thought he was actually crying, heh.

MOAR MOAR!!! And I would really enjoy that reference pic of yours^^

I could send you the .psd file of all the stills. xD I'm constantly adding and just sort of taking random shots with just one single thing I'm even focusing on, but if you really want dem... >u>
Oh I noticed that too! I think they could possibly cry even if he wasn't at the time, though, since their eyes are moist and they blink, which would mean (in mah logic :U) that they're spreading tears across the eye just like us. Or something. o_o

Ah well I guess I could even make a few jpgs of the stills... but that's more work for me. |:C

Le gasp!!! I would love that!!! But I shall look at them after tomorrow, cuz tomorrow I'll be getting the DVD OMGYESFINALLY!!! I'm so Although a psd file would probably be too big for regular mail...
Yeah, you're right. They're eyes DO get wet, of course, and that has to come from somewhere. Don't think we see it in the movie, or do we?

gutter-child In reply to suthnmeh [2010-01-30 00:41:01 +0000 UTC]

YAY DVD It IS about time that came out, jeez. O_O They were really being cruel to you guys in Spain! xD

I've sent a .psd through like, hotmail before but that one WAS much smaller. This one has also 100 layers where as the one I sent before had maybe 20... 8U In essence I could spilt it up but if you have the DVD you can take your own ref stills. ;D BWAHAHA

No, to my knowledge they don't show them actually crying in the movie. But it would make sense and I mean they've got room for tear ducts so why the hell not? B:

Yeeeeh uuuum I really COULD if my stupeed DVD player would be so kind as to ACTUALLY WORK!!! *kicks it* I'll get a new one. Eventually =___=. So you don't worry about it^^

I think they don't show em crying cuz there's no time for many AND chris is just too tough? O___o Ffff must analyse every frame of the film!!!
