Explosion should be bigger imo. Also you should blur the stars so they look distant like they should. Otherwise, good attempt for a first time.

Do you want critique, or do you want me to leave it at "it looks good for a first attempt"?

I don't know much about programs, but I know the makings of a good image when I see it. The thing you have to focus on it detail, cont content. In space, no matter how dark it is, you will always be able to see the opposite side of a planet when its being light on one side, maybe not well, but just enough to know its there. The fact that you tried to add the detail is great, but maybe spruce it up a little bit so we know that there is the rest of the planet there. The wisps in front of where the rest of the planet is should be a little less solid then thouse in the rest of the galaxy, it would give a better feel of distance, cause when you are inside a nebula it is less solid then from looking at it outside.
Now to the action, I think you have wonderful start to where this is going you only need two things:
1. What caused the explosion? I am looking and I can not find the source. Maybe a meteor hit, maybe a volcano long dormant erupted, give me some clue as to why this happened.
2. What is happening to the planet? All I see here is an explosion, I do not see damage. Is there a crater, will there be dust flying into its light atmosphere, maybe the explosion cause some cracking in the planets surface? I can not see what is happening so it leaves the viewer a little left out.
So pretty much, "What's happened" and "What's happening," are the questions you should ask yourself and then dictate through your design.
All in all, though, this is VERY impressive for your first time. I couldn't do this if I tried, I just know how to critique art, hoping that the artist can make it happen for themselves. I think if you keep trying to improve you will make a great space scape artist and could really make a name for yourself, as well as be able to master whatever other forms of digital media you would like to create.
Good Luck.
