I did it entirely through Gibbed's. The first thing to do is the first save you have access to, go into the Plot Flags for ME1 and mark both Kaidan and Ashley as rescued on Virmire. The game seems to accept this scenario with no problem. Then whenever you want them in your squad, you open a save and go to the ME3 Plot "Henchmen", mark them both as acquired and in squad, then reload that save. Viola!
That being said, on Mars and Menae it's very buggy, and there are several points where you won't be able to proceed without reloading with the correct people in the squad. Also, if you are on the Normandy and your current save has them both acquired, neither of them will actually be on the Normandy (so I'd have to save, change Ashley to NOT acquired, and reload in order to talk to Kaidan on the ship. But the romance plot proceeded successfully
On the missions that must occur before the Coup - Menae, SurKesh, Grissom, Tuchanka-Cure and the Coup - they don't have any dialogue; but for all the rest they are fully engaged and conversational. On the later missions that require a specific team member (Eden Prime, Thessia, Cronos) it is glitchy - some of the cutscenes are skipped over, and one of them will deliver Liara or EDI's lines (in Liara or EDI's voice); but you can successfully complete the missions with them.
