Description Okay, I put this in the "resources" category mainly so I could label it as a "tutorial" - yeah, dA's categorisation system needs some work, basically. I simply wanted to give you guys an idea of my work process when I design a character, so I took my latest piece and scanned it through the preliminary stages before finishing and inking it to show what I do and how I do it. Yeah, probably total yawn, but I thought A FEW of you might be interested ...

So anyway ...

1. I start with the basic structure, first off a basic "stickman" skeleton upon which I then build the anatomical framework. In all likelihood MUCH of this you're not gonna see in the finished piece, but it still dictates how the clothing with interact with the form so it's kind of necessary.

2. In this case I started with the pants, then worked my way up. This is usually the way I go, but it depends on the circumstances. I also tend to put in the footwear at this point too, since this tends to interact directly with long pants.

3. Then the hoody, worn underneath the jacket - you'll notice I didn't bother with the sleeves since this is ENTIRELY superfluous detail. But the hood, and how it lies, was a particularly important element and so took a lot of work to get right.

4. The jacket, and also the gloves. At this point the structural part's essentially finished.

5. The finishing touches before I go on to the "rendering" of the sketch. At this point I put in the basic structure of the face and head, the hair, etc. prior to nailing the details of his features. I also added the much simpler sketch of the duffel bag at this point.

I know, I know. Soooooooo dull ... but I hope SOME of you found it a useful insight into my work process ...
