Description I'm not having any luck with watercolours lately. I'm just glad I had the intuition to scan this before I ruined it.

Coloured inks, watercolour, salt, masking fluid, slight saturation adjustment in Photoshop.

Hey there I found this piece via Gold-Seven and it was an instant favorite. I'm a sucker for watercolour/ink effect paintings, and yours is a perfect example of capturing that lively feeling of liquid paint. I just love watercolours (I'm yet to experiment with inks, although they sound fascinating), the process of painting and just watching how the colours move around, blend together, form such beautiful fractals and forms. And bonus for you to making also a pretty scenery out of it, those trees are lovely. *_*

GreenSprite In reply to UllaThynell [2012-04-28 09:22:09 +0000 UTC]

I like inks because it's much easier to create effects like salt texture or waterdrops on them. They're much more sensitive to these things than watercolour. Do give them a try when you can! This piece was completely inspired by ink behaviour, in a way. I'm glad I have someone who loves the medium and appreciates what I did here

Salt is such wonderful stuff to use with watercolours . I love the colours with this, vivid and autumn-flavoured.

WOW. How come I've never seen this one? Staggering technique, wonderful feel. Fantastic image.

GreenSprite In reply to Gold-Seven [2012-03-19 09:53:11 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's a whole lot of compliment there. I'm really happy you like it!

The technique happened because this is 80% ink, and inks are much more sensitive to water drops and salt than watercolours (at least in my experience). I just (ab)used that as much as I could.

Very interesting. I've debated trying around with ink as well, and it seems I really ought to. Sounds like multi-coloured coffee!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenSprite In reply to Gold-Seven [2012-03-19 12:14:20 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I don't think it behaves like coffee. You said coffee is more forgiving than watercolour... well, ink is less forgiving. It stains and there's absolutely no way to lift it off the paper once it's dry. But I often prefer it over watercolour because the colors are more vivid, you can cover large areas faster, and it's easier to avoid hard edges where you don't want them (if you paint wet on wet). Plus, the previously mentioned fancy effects.

Definitely give ink a try! I find it very useful and fun Get the cheapest you can find, I do too and it works great.

No luck?! Curse your humility!

I love this - love the autumnal colours, the salt and masking-fluid effects. Brilliant way to capture trees without the horror of painting every single effing leaf!

I am madly in love, how you work with watercolor. * __ * You do invent, or somewhere you take these techniques?

GreenSprite In reply to Temrak [2010-11-05 18:11:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, they're well-known techniques (such as using salt). I guess what makes my watercolors different is the fact that I use many layers.
Thank you *_*

I have about 10 years of practice already, and I think I master them well enough It's not that. Sometimes they just suddenly decide to hate me for a while. Which is fine, since I enjoy digital art too.

Well, you DID adjust the colors in photoshop, or something like that, so... maybe the original looks ugly...? XD

GreenSprite In reply to haius [2010-10-28 18:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Hah no I think I actually went a teeny bit overboard with the saturation, so this version is uglier. I assure you the tweaking is minimal, anyway

Feidhelm In reply to GreenSprite [2010-10-30 12:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Oh, next time you feel that the colors are taking an odd turn, why not wash the paper (in the sink)? It will leave a faint trace of color that you can use for the background or to build a color scheme that you might like more.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenSprite In reply to Feidhelm [2010-10-30 14:02:20 +0000 UTC]

Inks don't wash off, as far as I know, and I use more ink than watercolour when painting lately. And I do like the colours here, why are you saying this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Feidhelm In reply to GreenSprite [2010-10-30 14:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Because you always seem to be displeased with the way your watercolors turn out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenSprite In reply to Feidhelm [2010-10-30 15:38:48 +0000 UTC]

Um... that's not entirely true. I did ruin the original, but I like this version that I scanned. And even if I could wash off the mistake, it would ruin the background which is a pretty big deal. I'm afraid I'm not one of those magical people who can correct their watercolors.
