Description In Homer's epic poem "The Iliad," Chryseis (sometimes spelled "Criseis") is a key character. She is the daughter of a Trojan priest named Chryses. When the Greeks capture Chryseis during the Trojan War, she becomes the unwilling prize of Agamemnon, the Greek commander. Chryses, desperate to retrieve his daughter, goes to the Greek camp and offers a ransom in exchange for her release. Agamemnon, however, stubbornly refuses. In response to Chryses' prayers for help, Apollo, the god of the sun and plague, sends a devastating plague upon the Greek army. Realizing the source of the plague, the Greeks, under the advice of their seer Calchas, compel Agamemnon to return Chryseis to her father in order to appease Apollo and end the suffering. This act of releasing Chryseis leads to a bitter conflict between Agamemnon and Achilles, setting the stage for much of the subsequent action in the epic.
