Description Kiss

“Please mum,” Toby asked Mrs Lovett eagerly, pulling on her skirts frantically, “can I go down to the market.”

“Why on earth would you wanna go to the market dear?” the baker asked suspiciously, hands rested on her hips, “What’s so interesting about the market, hmm?”

“Erm, to get some supplies,” Toby lied quietly, “anyway I haven’t been to the Pub…I mean market, in ages!”

“Alright then,” Nellie sighed kindly, looking out of the shop window, “it is a beautiful day. You shouldn’t be cooped up in here. Go on then. But don’t be stopping by any pubs, you hear!”

“Err, yes mum!” Tobias replied hurriedly, fingers crossed behind his back.

With that the young lad flew through the open door of the hot pie shop and made his way down the street. Mrs Lovett watched the boy disappear into the distance. Nellie smiled to her self as she gazed up at the white sun, held in the sky by wisps of icy clouds. She was aching to go outside and enjoy the lovely weather whilst it lasted. It was horribly humid in the shop and the heat lay heavy in the empty air, leaving Mrs Lovett feeling terribly uncomfortable. Sweat dripped off of her brow and the heat left her feeling sluggish. The baker felt like she would collapse if she didn’t sit down.

She glided over to one of the small wooden chairs and took a seat. As the baker sat upon a wooden stool, attempting to cool her body temperature, she closed her eyelids and thought of the beautiful sea.  Mrs Lovett was aware she would have to get used to this sort of weather, the beach would be very hot during the summer months. She could see Mr T now, sat on the golden beach wearing a stripy swimsuit, smiling gleefully. How she wished he would hurry up and finish his ‘revenge’. The sooner Sweeney finished his murderous rampage, the sooner they would be taking a trip to the seaside. In her mind, Mrs Lovett began to plan the location of their future home.

“Hmm,” Nellie sighed dreamily, “We could travel to Cornwall, it’s meant to be lovely there, always sunny. Or, we could travel up North to Whitby! Yes of course! Mr T would love it at Whitby! A lovely beach and a gothic town and abbey! Perfect!”

Suddenly the door opened, waking Mrs Lovett from her daydreams.  She lurched from her wooden stool and smartened her self up. The figure in the doorway was Mr Todd, his expression exhausted. Nellie could see he wasn’t taken the hot weather too well either. His face was drenched with hot sweat, which he repeatedly wiped upon his dirtied sleeve. His once pale skin was now flustered and pink.

“Err, Mrs Lovett,” Sweeney panted, shuddering from the heat, “I came down to see how you are. I can’t stand it! I think I’m going to melt!”

“Tell me about,” Mrs Lovett complained scurrying back behind the counter, “want a mug of ale love? It’ll cool you down.”

Sweeney nodded. As the baker began filling up and dusty mug, Sweeney slumped back in one of the wooden chairs, wafting his hand in front of his face, trying to cool himself off. His clothes felt heavy against his skin and he only wished that the rain would begin pouring down. It was torture! Mrs Lovett plonked the mug down in front of Sweeney. He swiftly gulped the refreshing liquid down his dry throat, only stopping to gasp for air.

“You’re going to have get used to it” the baker smiled watching the barber drink his fill.

“What?’ Sweeney quizzed, a look of confusion across his red face, “Get used to what?”

“The weather, pet!” Mrs Lovett chuckled to herself, “You know, when we move to the seaside. I thought we could go to Whitby! You’ll love it! It’s very dark, like you and we could bring Toby. Also…”

Sweeney shook his head and sighed. He got this everyday. The foolish baker went off, babbling on about the beach. It wasn’t as if HE wanted to go, but Mrs Lovett had already assumed he was coming along. Secretly, Sweeney despised the whole concept of the beach. The boiling weather every single day. It was just too much. Sweeney could hardly tolerate the warm weather of London!

Sweeney suddenly bolted upright when he spotted a customer heading towards his parlour upstairs. The baker was still chatting happily and Sweeney knew it would be hard to sneak off. He would have to excuse himself without upsetting Nellie too much. He wasn’t in the mood for arguing today. Maybe, slaying another innocent customer would raise his spirit. Sweeney rose up from his chair and approached Mrs Lovett so he was face to face. He could see the baker’s confused expression.

“Mr T?” She asked, “What are you doing? I haven’t finished talking yet! Sometimes you’re so rude. One of these days I’ll…”

Mrs Lovett’s rant was came to an abrupt stop and Sweeney gently titled her chin upwards and pressed his grey lips against hers. Nellie was shocked yet delighted and pinched herself, just in case she was dreaming. However, this was no dream. Her eyelids fluttered airily. Her little heart was hammering in her chest. The gentle kiss seemed to last forever.  Eventually, Sweeney slowly pulled away and with a sweaty hand, stroked Mrs Lovett’s pale cheek affectionately. Mrs Lovett’s pink lips moulded into a small, satisfied smile and she sighed calmly.

“May I go now?’ Sweeney asked softly, brushing a strand of clammy hair from Nellie’s eyes carefully.

“Yes” Mrs Lovett breathed, still speechless about what had just happened.

With that, Sweeney spun round and ran up to his barber’s shop above. Mrs Lovett felt dazed and lightly fell backwards onto a wooden chair, her eyes half shut. Surely, that hadn’t just happened! She MUST have dreamt it! Sweeney had never been so kind. The baker smiled and concluded the heat must have affected his brain.

“By the sea,” Nellie sung dreamily, floating off into a deep sleep, “wouldn’t that be smashing…”
