Opticon/Opticorn/Gammons/Sixties-Japan-What-Were-You-Even-Doing

I don't...think? I'm going to do every monster. But we'll see. I'm kinda lukewarm on how these have gone, so far...

The original 1967 Giant Robo is ridiculous, the weird dub doubly so, and I love every minute of it.

omg I can't tell you how excited I am to see this!  I got into GR thanks to the 90's OVA - and I got into THAT all because I love giant eyeballs   So obviously when I got around to watching "Johnny Sokko," Opticon was my fav monster.  I even stuck him in an OVA GR fanfic just 'cos I wanted to write about him

I have the little figure of him that calls him "Gammons," so who knows what the hell his real name is

HEH and I LOVE when something like this unearths fans of the old sixties show, in turn! It's so delightful and so were Opticon's episodes, hah!

Also back when I was going to make posters of every monster (I'll pick it up again eventually! There will be many, many more GR things to come if things go well) I was looking into the names for all of them, and I got Opticon, OpticoRn and Gammons, so I feel like it hit a weird stumbling block making it over here to the states, too. I just went with the first one for the poster because I saw it the most!

You even drew its legs. Awesome! So, are you gonna do Giant Robo himself at some point?

This one's my dad's favorite monster - he always loses it when poor Opticon starts tiny-kicking Robo (that eye never stood a chance in hand-to-hand!). I'd be remiss if I didn't!

And I will, eventually! I've tried a couple of times, both with this Robo and the OVA version, and fell flat on my face. (I might post em, anyway!) He'll probably get a proper illustration in my normal style, eventually!

Drakolon is my dad's favorite. He loves the noise it makes

To be honest I am only good at drawing the old school one

I have tried drawing the OVA one various times but I always get the damn biceps the wrong size

Technically his name is OpticoRn but the R is silent I guess

Didn't you say on Twitter you had an idea for a reboot of Giant Robo?

Also I'd love to see your take on the title robot

Oh, yeah - I waffled HARD on which to use, the literature I've got has both! It was a coin toss in the end. (I'm wondering if it's one of those weird dub cases where like...Guillotine or someone says one thing and the rest of them say another, but it's been a while since I saw that episode)

And yes! Kind of, at least. I want it to morph into a portfolio project at the very least. Though I did animate Johnny yelling into his watch way back during the 50th anniversary celebrations - I'll clean it up, eventually! Perhaps I can start flinging it around to people once I get enough of a solid body of stuff from which I can work!

(And he's coming!

Yay!

I mean people have gotten more interested in the Johnny Sokko version of Giant Robo thanks to Comet airing it. The OVA which at one point every anime fan in the states-even if they never seen it-knew about it is now falling back into obscurity after briefly given notoreity by RebelTaxi and then forgotten about. The Toku on the otherhand is becoming the most accesable show of the series to watch. Must be the fact that it is among the few non educational kids shows left on over the air tv channels.
