Description From the land of sky-blue waters - Hamm's Brewery, on the East Side of Saint Paul.

It's been abandoned for many years, but its many buildings still sprawl across the neighborhood. (Look online - and even on deviantArt for some nice urban exploration photos from people who've found their way inside!)

It actually is part of the bluff overlooking Swede Hollow, the subject of another one of my paintings! fav.me/d31ouqk

This is the biggest painting I've ever made, so far. It's about thirty-six inches tall, and took weeks to complete. I like how it turned out, personally!

Oooh... this is nice. I like industrial motives and it's nicely contrasted with a clear blue sky.

This is great, but you know that they took a lot of this down..
I love your style..it's a nice recollection of how it used to be!

Yup. A few to the right of this setup is already gone, and checking the plans, the buildings I was standing between are also slated to come down, too (Unsure whether the power house will, too, but I can see them imploding that stack eventually). Which makes me a little sad, because the inside of the one to my right was once absolutely gorgeous. But there are also massive holes in the floor for where the beer vats used to be, so I can't really see it being used for anything else.

...the painting's a historical piece, now!

And thanks!

Yes it is..and I've heard that Hams Beer is about to make a comeback in a
big way! Where they'll brew it is a good question!

A nice portrayal of this area, the buildings just have that old and knowledgeable quality to them.

Thank you!

They're like that in real life, too - The one on the right especially had some great architecture going on, inside and out, and that once-this-was-amazing sort of feel about it.

Actually, if you search Hamm Brewery on DeviantArt, the rest of the results are photos from people who have gotten inside...you can get a little bit of an idea of how it once was from those ([link] is a favorite of mine.)

Thank you, very much! It took quite a while to finish this, but I love the area (I like these abandoned/forgotten spots with a lot of history), and I hope that came across.

When did you paint this? It sure wasn't like that in 2010. Or did you paint it from a picture?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 2

Grace-Dupre In reply to soundlessw [2011-04-24 21:50:55 +0000 UTC]

I just went down there today - they're knocking the building across the street down! I think these two are coming down too, if I have my building numbers right (definitely the one on the right).

soundlessw In reply to Grace-Dupre [2011-04-25 02:16:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I saw that the other day.

It's kind of sad, the insides are so beautiful, from what I've seen. [link]

This is relatively new - I took the picture and began the painting around mid-November. This was around a corner, down a narrow little alley, by a broken fence - nothing was working, compositionally, and I was looking for the burnt-out shell of one of the older buildings - which didn't work, anyway, as a cop was hanging around. This is close to those, and was literally: turn around, kneel, look up, *click.*

I think you did a pretty nice job at getting this down, not to mention showing how it's aged with abandonment. I think the streaks of blue in the sky actually work as a very nice effect. Shame it's not a nicer photo, but oh well.

Nice, I love these kinds of urban/industrial landscapes. It reminds me of Toronto's Gooderham & Worts Distillery district before it was restored (aka sanitized) into a tourist destination.

Grace-Dupre In reply to citypainter [2010-12-21 01:57:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I do, too! A lot of those buildings look similar.

I wonder what they'll do with this complex - it's too big to really be ignored for long...I've heard rumors of them being converted into apartments, but years have gone by since then, and they're just as empty as ever...I wonder if making it a historic district like Toronto did with theirs could help the neighborhood - bits of our East Side are pretty notorious for crime and poverty. Maybe...

I like your paintings, by the way. Looking forward to more!

The Toronto Distillery was abandoned for years as well, also on the east side of the downtown, but the area is rejuvenating quickly. The new district is very touristy but at least it is now being used for something! Glad you like my paintings.
