A Taang Story Part 1

The lone monk sat meditating with only one thing on his mind. Not even the one hundred year old war that burdened him could distract Aang from his deep concentration. While his companions lie peacefully in their tents, Aang remained awake. Confusion clouded his mind as he began to question his relationship with the blue-eyed girl he once desired. He knew not whether to embrace or neglect these new feelings he kept inside about the blind earthbender. All the young airbender knew was that these emotions existed and would continue to grow stronger.

Asleep, Katara was enthralled in an everlasting dream. She saw herself sinking into the depths of the ocean. Aang stood on the shore staring down into the water; but he did not dive in to save her. He stood motionless waving a final goodbye. She waved back happily, as if nothing was wrong. Soon her sinking turned to falling. A figure emerged from the darkness. He was holding a lantern with his arms outstretched; ready to catch the water tribe girl. Katara landed in the stranger's arms. She looked up to thank the boy, but when she did, she saw the face of the enemy. She lay speechless in Jet's arms. Her first love smiled and spoke ever so quietly, "Be with me Katara. Now and forever."
"How can I trust you?"
"You just do."
Katara kissed him briefly on the lips as he smirked back at her. Suddenly Jet removed his hands from under her and he floor disintegrated into a white powder while she found herself falling once again. This time there was no one there to catch her. Her blue eyes glittered as she watched the ground approaching her. Katara awoke breathless with her lonely heart pounding, wishing that she wasn't alone.

Toph, being blind, could not synthesize dreams unless there were no pictures, no images just the darkness she'd seen her entire life. The earthbender's dreams usually consisted of what having sight would look like, feel like; but not tonight. Tonight her mind and heart were filled with thoughts of love. She recalled meeting a traveler by the name of Iroh who told her something she'd never forget. "Love is blind," the wise man had said. This simple, well-known saying had given Toph hope; hope of finding someone who knew her and looked past her condition. The blind earthbender had surpassed so many struggles and obstacles at the age of thirteen; it was time that something came easy to her and she had found it. Falling in love. The stubborn earthbender was confident she would not tell a single soul that she'd fallen for the Avatar.
