Snow fell from the grey Tokyo sky. You looked up and sighed. It was cold. You rubbed your reddened nose with a tissue before stuffing you hands in your coat's pockets and continuing down the street. It was late at night and you were just now leaving your job. You usually didn't leave the office this late, but there was too much to do this week. You did menial office work for a big company part-time in order to pay your bills. It was a boring job, but hey, you had to do something. You were still in college, studying [subject], so it was hard for you to find an actually decent job. You pulled your scarf tighter around you face as you turned on a corner. It felt weird to be out this late; almost creepy. People were scarce and light street lights were a pale yellow. The silence was nearly deafening to you. That quiet was broken as you rounded another corner. Footsteps could be heard behind you. You had heard stories about people getting attacked late at night. They were eaten by the thing that humanity feared most. Ghouls. Your breaths quickened and you could hear the sound of your heart pumping in your head. Had this area always been this scary? The pace of the footsteps behind you sped up. It was clear now, whoever they were, there's more than one of them and they were definitely not friendly. The light of your apartment building could now be seen. You were almost safe. Relief began to wash over you as you got closer and closer to the building. Then you were slammed up against a wall. You felt the air leave you lungs as dread filled your veins. This was it. You were going to die. Two figures approached you. You were shaking, which made one of them laugh.

"Dude look at how scared the little thing is!" His voice was nearly sadistic.

"It's nothing special." A voice replied. "Let's just finish and get out of here, okay?"

You couldn't see much as your vision was beginning to fade. You couldn't even comprehend how fast your heart was beating. You swallowed the saliva in your mouth. So this is how it all ends, in a dark alleyway at the hands of two monster. What an ending. The pair came closer and you shut your eyes. You didn't want to see this. You waited for the end, but it never came. You heard the sound of screaming, followed by a sickening sound. The sound of flesh ripping from bone. You closed your eyes even tighter at the sound of bones crunching. The screamed eventually faded and footsteps began to approach you. You desperately wanted to scream as tears began to leak from your eyes, but no sounds came out. You felt utterly trapped. The steps stooped right in front of you. Your breaths had all but stopped when a voice spoke.

"Are you alright?" It was calm and somewhat stoic.

You cracked your eyes open a little to get a glimpse of what this person looked like. What you saw surprised you. It was a man who looked to be in about his mid-twenties. He had a handsome face and silky black hair that was shaved on one side, the rest of which he had messily tied up. On his arms were tattoos made up of intricate patterns. He was dressed in dark clothing with boots on his feet. What shocked you the most were his eyes. They were black, but had bright red irises. He was a ghoul. A ghoul had saved you. You began to carefully sit up. The ghoul reached out to help you, but you flinched before he could touch you. He slowly retracted his hand and stared at you. You were definitely scared. Your [eye color] eyes had stained your [skin color] face red and your [hair color] locks were tangled. Your eyes looked around to see if there was anyone else around, however all you could made out were bloody messes of flesh in the street. You looked at the ghoul again. Was he going to kill you?

"I'm Uta." His ruby eyes stared into your [eye color] ones. "I'm here to help you, if you'll trust me. After all, I did save you."

You furrowed your brows. Could he really be trusted? He had killed those two other ghouls, but did that really mean you were safe? You shifted your body and were struck by pain in you mid-section. There was no getting around this, you needed help. Uta saw this and reached out again. He placed a cold, pale hand on your right side and looked back at you.

"I-I'm [Name]..." You said with a shaky breath.

"Okay, [Name]. Let's go get you fixed up."

Uta had taken you back to his home and had bandaged you up. You laid down on the couch and stared at the ceiling. He was certainly an interesting ghoul. He talked about his shop and told you that he was a mask maker before you arrived. Uta didn't say much more than that to you. He kept to himself while he fixed you up, but make sure to be extra gentle whenever he neared the bruises near your rib cage. Even now he was quiet. He was in the kitchen, making coffee for you. The sound of footsteps made you look up. Uta was in the doorway of the room. His face was stoic, as usual, but in his hands he held a mug of coffee with steam coming off of the top. He continued to walk towards you and set the mug on the table beside the couch. You began to sit up, but were stopped by the pain. Uta rushed to your side and helped you to get up.

"Thanks..." You spoke quietly.

"I wasn't sure if you liked milk or sugar, so I kept it black." He watched you blow the steam off of the cup.

You took a sip and looked back at him.

"Uta, I have a question." He cocked his head. "Why did you help me back there? You could have easily ignored them or even eaten me yourself, so why save me?"

"It just didn't seem like your time to die."

Several weeks had passed since your accident. You felt much better and your bruises had nearly healed. You returned to work after a few days as well as school. You went to see Uta on the weekends. He would make coffee for you and ask about your condition. As you got better you began to come less often. Uta often found himself waiting for you, but most times you would never show up. He felt lonely and abandoned. Uta was attached to you. He thought that seeing you that winter night had been some act of fate to bring you two together. Whenever he saw you, his heart would speed up. He had asked Itori about what he was feeling and she told him that he was most definitely in love. Uta felt betrayed when you ceased coming all together. How could you defy the plan that fate had laid out for you? He was beyond mad.

"Hey... I know this place that's great for finding prey." Uta said to one of his customers.

"Really? Where?"

"Well it's..."

Your heart beat loudly in your chest. Here you were again. Lying on the ground, scared and helpless. The ghoul came closer and you could hear it lick its lips. You trembled when suddenly you heard the same sound you had heard that night. That same sickening sound. Footsteps approached once again. It couldn't be him, could it?

"[Name]... Are you alright?"

It was him. You opened your eyes and felt relief wash over you. You were safe. Uta gave a smile once he saw your eyes light up. He would do what ever it takes to keep you by his side, even make you black and blue.
