Description

A short little thing I wrote up trying to explain the origins of the Cooper line, the cane, and the conflict between the Coopers and Clockwerk.
I'm trying to get back into writing and such!

Reimagining : Sly Cooper

- Prehistoric Australia, The Gungathal Valley : 10,000 BC

His name was Sanzaruseitzobob.
In the language of his tribe this meant ‘Raider of Nests’, and like all braves he had to earn his name through a great and courageous deed in the cause of survival.
He was quite strong, but then again so was every other raccoon he knew.
But unlike the rest he was particularly good with his paws.
With the use of fibers, a wooden branch, and a shaped piece of bone he invented something the world had not yet seen.
He called it a Oggasmashbonecrusha.
History would refer to it as the first Cooper Cane.

Armed with this device not only could Sanzaruseitzobob could not only scale sheer cliffs of ice but also use the hooked end to snag pterodactyl eggs. He became the primary food provider of his people, earned his nickname, and gained another first for sentient creatures.
An ego.

Snagging eggs was not enough to satisfy Sanzaruseitzobob’s inflated self opinion as hero of his people. He needed to tackle more dangerous missions and find rarer prizes.

Such was The Glimmerrock.

Rumor had it a monstrous creature called Kerwkcolc lived on the highest mountain and the tallest peak jealously guarding a stone that had fallen from the sky and which gave off it’s own light and enhance the power and intellect of the wielder.
It was too tempting for Sanzaruseitzobob to pass up and one day he began the climb.
At the sacrifice of his tribe’s wellbeing, at the sacrifice of his own health and safety he crawled up the frozen spires, snuck through the labyrinthine tunnels, and finally made it to the inner sanctum of the monster Kerwkcolc who turned out to be an enormous owl.
Sanzaruseitzobob challenged the creature to a duel of wits.
The exact nature of the duel has been lost to the passage of time, but what is well known is the curse Kerwkcolc placed on Sanzaruseitzobob when he lost his previous Glimmerrock.
Everyone in his bloodline learns the poem by heart quickly and concisely.

The sun will shun you, shadows draw
Always chaos, never law
Until the last of all your line
Ever seek…and never find!

Some dismiss curses as antiquated.
The Coopers know better.

Thousands of years later…

A slim and dexterous shadow stole across the rooftops of Paris. In the city of lights it was difficult to remain unseen but not impossible, and Sly Cooper even at twenty was one of the best at remaining unseen.
This evening he was after the police station. This might have seemed counterintuitive given a thief might logically prefer to be as far away from that location as possible, but Sly wanted more than ever not only to reach the place but to break into it.
He managed the snatch and grab with signature panache and haste.
But the last thing he expected was to fall under the watchful eyes of a young patrolling inspector when he made his exit.
Carmelita Montoya Fox had been assigned to overwatch on the skyline to keep the Parisian Opera House safe at the behest of her employer Barkley. Armed only with her trusty stun gun she was fearlessly awaiting any enterprising bugler to win credibility and fame with swift execution of the law, like her father and his father and his father and HIS father before her.
She was not expecting the thief to be quite so…scrawny. Or seemingly unaccompanied by a gang.
Or with so infuriatingly smug a smirk on his face.
Unfortunately for Inspector Fox, this bold thief only appeared to be alone. Just as she was about to slap the cuffs on the rascal a support beam was knocked out of place below her with great force and the raccoon dropped down deftly from his perch onto the roof of a speeding van.
Recovering from her own tumble she saw a muscular, chuckling hippo trotting away from the scene.

The object of interest from the police station was a file folder on the most dangerous criminals the world currently knew of.
