Uhm, okay I´ll try to explain^^
The Wraith are kind of an accident.
The Ancients colonized many worlds in the Pegasus-galaxy. On one planet they oversaw that there lived a carnivour buglike creature - the iratusbug. A about one feet long, fourlegged bug. That bug feed by draining a cocktail of nurishing proteins, it sucks directly from his prey. (<- "lifeforce" -like vampires)
In the feedingprocess the bug absorbs small genetic samples, mostly with no or only a weak effect on their own genom.
But while feeding a long time from Ancients and absorbing constantly genetic fragments into their own, they evolved over thousands of years, step by step into a humanoid form - the Wraith.
The Wraith live in hives, all connected telepatic in a hivemind that is led by the queen, in giant organic ships.
On the top is the Wraithqueen, leading the hive. Its the oly female in a hive.
Second rank is the commander. They lead drones in battle, navigate, doing research and every higher task.
Last are the drones. Big warriors with a fleshgrown mask covering their whole face. (this is because they only follow the constant telepatic orders from the commander. Without a commander in range they are only intinctual acting carnivours, and so they need a muzzle so they don´t eat each other)
Drones aren´t able to do decisions or any deeper thought. Not controlled by a commander they are just mindless carnivours.
Commanders on the other hand are individual personalitys (not like the Borg from StarTrek), they can make decisions on their own, they got hive-internal names, ect.
You may ask: Why do a commander not rebell or break out?
Because a Wraith has the deep wish to be led.
The two most important things are: Feeding and serve a leader, a queen.
Feeding:
Like their ancestors, the iratusbugs, they feed on a proteincocktail. But through the long evolution they always fed on humans, and so they do now. (They can feed on other Wraith to, but humans are the primal prey)
They don´t bite humans. Wraith got two mouthlike rips in their handpalms. In the feedingprocess they pudsh the hand against the humans chest, the skin is perforated by thousands of needles (like jellyfish-tentacles), through this "tubes" they absorb proteins(lifeforce), causing agonizing pain and fast aging followed by dead.(<-The process takes about 2-4 mintues, in this time the human ages fastly, till only a mummylike corpse is left)
The Wraith see and treat humans like cattle.
Every planet colonized with humans get "visited" by a hive in intervals of 100-200years - a "culling"
While culling the Wraith catch most humans to feed on, left only enough to breed a new population. Because of the regular cullings most worlds are primitive, - the culture just can´t evolve in this short time.
By the way - A wraith cangrow VERY old. VERY!
In the series are Wraith with an age over 1000 years, I think a Wraithqueen in one episode is about 10000years old!
Soooooo, if I forgot something important or you want to read more (written by people who could explain it better xD)
