Description
This is a commission from ~BitVyper of his fantastic Thri-kreen character, Kythrick. He is a graceful creature, alien and powerful. I've always loved the concept of the Thri-kreen mantis warriors, but I have never seen one illustrated to my liking. I was very excited about this project and did a bunch of research and development to come up with a feasible bipedal mantis that looked like it could move, fight, and breathe. The Chinese characters in the corner mean 'bravery/courage'.Original size: 3300x4200 pixels (11x14)

Yes! Oh man... I've been a fan of the concept since Dark Sun first came out and the illustrations always frustrated me... I'm big into bugs and, while I realize this is a FANTASY SETTING I do like a little sense thrown in. The commissioner was wanting a more realistic depiction of how a Thri-Kreen would look and I jumped at the chance.

I've never cared for a lot of the Thri-kreen's official designs myself...this is much cooler, gorgeously done and succeeds at preserving actual mantis anatomy. I'm glad it has an actual abdomen, unlike some official illustrations

Oh GOOD and Thank you! I have a great love of mantids and I got really tired of seeing the bizarre disproportionate "ant man" illustrations. When I was commissioned to draw a portrait I jumped at the chance.

The artwork is stunning and I especially love the concept. Having little hands under his forward claws is truly ingenious! Haha, quite the work-around for staying true to mantid anatomy while allowing him to carry kick ass weapons.

Yeah, I do so dig that race. I made a monk with one of them, and focused on getting him to jump as high as I could, when all was said and done, the full jump height was around 360'+/- from a stand still
