Exactly!
I just think over all, the quality of the original movie and Freddy character beat the remake to a pulp. I also think old fred's voice was much creepier, while the remake sounded like he was a bit constipated. XD

'A Nightmare on Elm Street was originally going to follow the same design as Platinum Dunes' other remake, Friday the 13th, with the writers taking what they thought were the best elements from each of the films and creating a single storyline with them. Eventually, they decided to use Craven's original storyline, and try to create a scarier film. That being, they decided to remove the one-line quipping Freddy, who had become less scary and more comical over the years, and bring him back to a darker nature...'~wikipedia

I know. I've read that before. I've even watched a behind the scenes doc on the remake. but I still think they kind of failed at that. While, everyone thinks re freddy became darker, he really did not. Why dose no one notice he used old freddy's jokes tons of times in the film? He just said them in a more pedo fasion. Infact if anything he became weaker rather then more evil. Because they made his character more sympathetic, he became less of a sick person. The first Freddy enjoyed haveing his face all burned up. Infact he loved it. It made him feel truly terrifying and that's what he wanted. He feeds off your fear and inocence because he's just really that vile. So, not only when he attacked the children of elm street for revenge on the parents, it gave him a chance to feel the thrill of the twisted shit he dose.
Even though re Fred was a child molester, he was still just too sympathtic about it. He was angry at the kids for "telling on him" so he went after them for revenge. Not just because he's a sick bastard.
Honestly, it seemed he really loved kids.

But i can agree on a few things, I did not terribly mind some of the scenes in the remake. A couple where well thought out and creative. But none, sadly were fresh ideas that did not rely on jump scares.

Maybe , lacked isn`t the best word . However , I feel Jackie conveyed that psychological depth better if only for the fact he wasn`t bogged down by a long , convoluted , plot hole-filled franchise the way Robert`s Freddy was .

Well, i certainly see where you are coming from! I really am only a fan of the original 1984 film. I'm not trying to stand up for the sequels because, you're right, any darkness Orig. Fred contained was drowned away in those sequels.

I can understand too, what you mean about jackie's freddy having more deepness. It is true that his backstory was more filled out and gave more detail into why he did what he did. I just never felt fear of him because his intentions seemed a bit mixed up. Dose he love Nancy or dose he want to kill her? I'd be more fearful of someone who'd torchure and kill me in a horrible manor rather than someone I was unsure of. But just making jackie's freddy a "victem" in a sense made me pity him, almost. I never felt the need to shudder at his face or back away when he raised his blades. I think somthing that really turned me away from him was the fact he never smiled. Somthing i loved about the old freddy was that in his smile, you could see he loved what he was doing. But i still respect your veiw, I always wished the original would go deeper into Freddy's mind.

Also , while I liked some aspects of the " Freddy`s Nightmares " series , I didn`t like how the first Episode made pre-burned Fred Krueger just like post-burned Freddy as portrayed in The Sequels , only with a raspier voice . And , the way he laughed as he was burning ? I mean , I don`t care how sadomasochistic you are , you are not gonna be laughing as you`re burning to death in the third degree . That was just taking it to extremes of cartoonish evil where it`s no longer creepy , it`s just plain silly . I Also , it totally contradicts Freddy`s original conception as a dark , tortured revenge-killer .

I got the impression he wanted to get close to Nancy and kill the other teens for getting in the way as well as ( Like in the Original ) getting a sort of vicarious revenge on their parents for burning him . He also stated " I had to keep you awake just long enough so that when you finally slept , you`d never wake up again " . Translation : He didn`t want any competition for possession of " his Little Nancy " so he planned to kill her in the Real World so her soul would remain with him in the Dream World for him to pleasure himself with her for all eternity . So , Jackie`s Freddy enjoyed what he was doing as well , just in a different way . Now , I enjoyed every Film of the Nightmare Franchise in some way , however I felt something got lost when they made Freddy less of a raging , dark , perverse revenge-killing psychopath and more of a jokey , sadomasochistic , sexist , anti-establishment , murderous anti-hero . Jackie`s Freddy like New Nightmare Freddy brought that something back and I love those Films for that !

Goblin-Beast In reply to WrathFan99 [2012-12-18 01:34:20 +0000 UTC]

I agree to the fullest! Again, I'm really just maching Jackie's Freddy up robert Englund's original preformance rather than the whole franchise. Mainly because those two are the darkest Freddies.
The only problem i see with "he planned to kill her in the Real World so her soul would remain with him in the Dream World for him to pleasure himself with her for all eternity" is because it's never really clarified that he even takes the souls of is victems and keeps them in his boiler room, in the remake. This idea was only cemented in the orig franchise after the 3rd movie.

I'm certainly happy they tried to make a darker Freddy, and don't get me wrong, I think JEH is a amazing actor! He was brilliant in little children and in watchmen. But I personally, was never frightened by his characters. They are dark, and very tragic, but never somthing I would fear, hate, or be completely disgusted by.

Also , keep in mind the jump scares , jokes , gore and plot holes in The Reimagining were largely due to studio interference because they were afraid the purists would be even more upset if The Film was totally divorced from the Original Franchise . This fear and desire to take the " safe route " disrupted the integrity of The Reimagining . Samuel Bayer`s original vision for The Reimagining was far darker , grittier , more cerebral much like The Original , delved more into the twisted Freddy/Nancy
quasi-romance and the deepest , darkest corners of Freddy`s mind . The studio and producers wanted more ambiguity so much of Bayer`s original vision for The Reimagining was lost in the editing process . There are fair arguments on both sides whether that ambiguity is a good thing or a bad thing but you have to realize The Reimagining in its final form is more of a Platinum Dunes and Michael Bay Film than a Samuel Bayer Film . I still enjoyed The Reimagining but it would have been better had Bayer been allowed free reign much as The Original would have been even better had Wes Craven been allowed free reign .

Exacly! I really could not have stated that better. I'm quite sad the story feel into the hands of platinum dunes. It really gave the move an overall cheap feel to it. Not that the orig did not have it's many flaws, wich, like you said was mainly due to wes not having his freedom. I do still, have that appreciation for what the reimagining could have been, but i agree with you. The glossing of the studio ruined somthing that had potential.

Let me clarify : I was referring to Nancy only and by " soul " I meant Freddy`s memory of her rather than her actual soul since Freddy himself was a repressed memory and drew his power from memories ( Which was also in the original concept for The Character , got swept under the rug with the Dream Demon stuff in the sequels and was brought back full force for Freddy vs. Jason , New Nightmare and The Reimagining ).

Freddy`s always been both a victim and victimizer . They`re not mutually exclusive . Humanizing the monster makes things more realistic but it takes us out of our psychological comfort zone by showing us things are not always black and white , no matter how evil someone is they can have some tiny shred of goodness within them and no matter how good someone is or thinks he is that person can do terrible things for what he sees as justice . As Robert Englund put it in an Interview : " Freddy represents neglect . The kids try to convince their parents of these terrible things that are happening to them but they don`t believe their kids until it`s too late . How could they ? " Also , a lot of times abused people become abusers themselves later in life and this is shown to be the case with both the Original Freddy in " Freddy`s Dead " and the new Freddy in the Reimagining .

Well, that's true. I like more then one level characters in most siduations,it's just the idea of mercy to me that weakens a character. If you have that hunch they may spare you or have other emotions tourds you, it's almost more fascinating than scary.
Robert Englund also said that "this character is so awful and evil, he needs some humanity. So those darting little beaty eyes will be my humanity." I felt that this was achived in a sense, you could see some emotion behind the fixed mean brows and deep cuts.

WrathFan99 In reply to Goblin-Beast [2012-12-17 08:56:12 +0000 UTC]

The jokes were added in by the studio because they were afraid if The Film was totally divorced from the previous franchise , purists would bitch up a storm . And , I respectfully disagree . I think making Freddy more human actually made him scarier because it shows if we`re not careful , we might end up going down the same dark road of life he did . Also , in Real Life good and evil are rarely pure and never simple . I got the impression that if Jackie`s Freddy were a better man , he`d make a really good guardian for Nancy . Before The Remake , we never really saw the burning of Freddy , we saw glimpses of it but never the whole thing and certainly never the torturous impact it must have had on his psyche which you gotta give Jackie Earle credit for because he really brought that out . What makes Jackie`s Freddy darker than Robert`s is not just his voice and personality but the sheer psychological depth Jackie brought to The Role than Robert`s version for all its humor and creepiness lacked .
