Love this, i like the way it has parts on the left that highlight the headings. and the cleanness of the design.

People must like this because I've seen at least 2 designs so far that are heavily 'inspired' by this look. Does look tricky to code though.

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah, I've seen at least one design that looked very similar to this, exact same colours and that. They did give credit, but still.

Looks great! I do agree with the above poster's comment that the orange gradient does contradict the rest of the style a little bit.

Also, I find the background a bit confusing. Is it supposed to give the illusion of depth? If so, I think that offsetting either the background or the foreground by a few pixels (10 maybe) up or down might achieve the effect. Of course, if that's not your intent, disregard lol.

Otherwise, I think it looks great. As already said, the colors and the cleanliness of the design are great. Keep up the good work!

Thanks I know what you're saying about the orange but it is better with the gradient. It isn't too out of place, I've used gradients elsewhere in the designt too.

You're right about the background. I think it adds depth to the design as you said, but offsetting the background is a bit too much. I understand completely what you mean though as I've done it in other designs.

Anyway.. Thanks a lot!

This concept is trippy. It would be hell to code this as is I believe and that's not a bad thing for me, it's a good thing. I like the clean minimalist approach but yet creative and not boring. The colours are attractive. I'd really like to see colours in the logo, it might go better with the design and colours used but more importantly it will stand out.

I want you to complete the design and put in some nice sponsor boxes just to complete the look and feel. It feels like your hurried to finish it a bit by doing that.

The other thing I wanted to point out is font. Use some interesting font here and there. I especially don't like the one for 'featured critique'. Check out Smashingmagazine.com for quality free fonts.

The icon for RSS is weak, use something creative. Again, see smashingmagazine.com for insanely cool RSS icons. Remove the gradient from the orange box, it's inconsistent with your design style which uses flat colours against drop shadows.

Under 'featured critique' I'd like it to hold a bit more font than that. It's a full article so it would be nice to have it hold more copy but try not to mess up that awesome layout you have.

Overall, I love this concept and layout. Very nice work.

Thanks for entering!

Okay, thanks a lot for the critique I do understand what you mean, I really did try with the logo. I read what you said about basing the design around the logo not the other way round or something like that, but I really think it is best in white.

You are right, I was was rushing quite a bit with this lol. It is the 11th Feb already in the UK lol I just wanted to get the submission in on time. What images I should use for sponsors?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "interesting font". Before the font shown here I was using Helvetica Neue which seemed to fit a bit better but isn't exactly interesting, however, I did consider inde-graphics' "advent". Maybe I could give that a shot?

The RSS icon is simple, I know. I looked at smashingmagazine for RSS icons but none of them didn't seem to fit in. To be honest, the design is very minimalistic and that is quite limiting to some degree, but I really can't help it, it's just my style

The orange box looks really bad without the gradient.

Yeah, that's no problem. I can make the font, line-spacing smaller etc. to fit more text under there.

Okay well that's about it, once again thanks a lot! I will definitely be making some edits to this, but its 1 o'clock in the morning and I'm knackered. I get back from college about 4 o clock so I will still have time.

Cheers!!

For sponsors, just go to some blog and copy their ads.

Okay, I updated it slightly. A couple of minor adjustments, and I changed the "featured critique" text. The font I used is "Aller" off smashingmagazine. Not sure if its much of an improvement. I also added the sponsors which I just copied from smashingmagazine.

I think adding some icons, for example for the "blog, submit, follow" bit would make it seem a bit less simple. I'll try to see what I can do.
