Description Do you know how to carve?
Do you know how to read?
Do you know how to get?
Do you know how to tempt?
Do you know how to ask?
Do you know how to blot?

This took me several hours to etch into the plastic sheet. A good eight hours is my best estimate. All those little curves.
The poem on it is an old poem about the nordic runes, and I've layed them along the edges. The little symbol at the bottom is a runegaldr for balance, which is what I strive for in all things.
The ink took a while to get right.
The paper it's pressed on originally is a postcard/watercolour pad.

By some odd reason i understood what it said - without reading your translations.
It may be because it resembles Norwegian.. o;
Just more.. "i"-ish . The old norwegian..o;

Veistu hve = Vet du hvor .. o; .. jup. it resembles. X'''333 ah, sorry, bothersome comment.

lol

do you know read runes?

and that language on the poem, is Icelandic, or old nordic?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Freetha In reply to Namarriendaenn [2008-01-09 21:37:03 +0000 UTC]

I read runes yes.
And the poem is an icelandic adaptation of an old norse poem. Basicly all that's changed is the spelling.

I have a couple of original "prints" made with the pinscratched plate. I could consider selling some of those. But I don't have the things I need to make any new pinscratched thingies yet. It's on the list of "things I'll get when I have the coin".

Some of the characters exactly looks same as Turkish Orkhon alphabet: [link]

Also I read a book about Scandinavia and Turks are somehow releated as Finnish and Turkish is in same language familiy.

The misinformation spread about the vikings is to blame for the confusion. It's know that the vikings were merchants first and foremost and made their livelyhood off of selling and buying goods all over. The sailed up the Nile to the south and did business with the people they called the "blue-men", they sailed as far into inland russia as any river could take them and bought and sold goods there, they even sailed to the west to find America (Vinland) and followed it's coast as far down south as is now known as New York.
It's known that these travelling merchants affected all of the europian languages by carrying words from place to place (no matter which place was first to use the word). It's quite possible that the runes and the orkhon have thus affected each other.

I really like it. Don't know if you can understand that, but for me, every word written in runes feels..deeper and more mystical as written in everyday-letters...

Nice work

absolutely love this.. your tree-like symbol at the top must have been ouchy to do! ^~ and runic is one of the most beautiful scripts [in my opinion].. as is the cyrillic alphabet. AND something nordic.. is that Icelandic? if so *sPaZz* XD - my favourite language~ well done & keep it up!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Freetha In reply to hirsch-reh [2007-09-14 22:35:39 +0000 UTC]

Well I am icelandic. The poem is in old norse.

Thank you.

The treelike symbol took about 12 hours just that.. each scratch just a tiny tiny part of the whole thing, my hand was acctually sore for a week after I finished.

SerpentRose [2007-09-14 06:54:40 +0000 UTC]

Nice work. ^^ I work with runes too. Why did you write 'Runir' at the top?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Freetha In reply to SerpentRose [2007-09-14 09:01:40 +0000 UTC]

Because I wanted to.
Well acctually I thought it would stick out as a "loud" contrast to the softer pattern above and the poem below. (That poem, btw, is one of the parts of HΓ‘vamΓ‘l and is considered to be over a thousand years old.)

I love the runes, not only for their beaty but their meanings. I work with them not only in art, but also as a part of my heathen life.

it's just the runic alphabet repeated around the edges.
I would have writen something but with the cramp in the arm from the scratching of the needle, over and over and over, my mind sortof went completely blank
