I'm never really sure what storms look like at night, structural features can be difficult to identify. When I'm shooting lightning, I always wonder what a storm would look like had it been lit by daylight. In this case, I stopped wondering about what it would look like and simply enjoyed what it did look like

Please tell me what you think!

Love this. Spectacular contrast in colours between the sulphur street lights and the blue/white lightning. I really love all of the reflections from the different light sources in the clouds. Awesome.

Thank you very much! That's what surprised me most about this image, I didn't expect it to expose the dynamic light so well

Storms at night are way more interesting than daytime--who knows what form of nastiness (translate to FUN! ) hides in the dark?

Awesome capture Evan

Storms at night are alright if they're weak storms. If they're strong supercells though, I want the daylight so I can see every little detail of that structure

It's great that it's possible to take pictures like that - in this way you / we all / I can enjoy this bolt longer then just some milliseconds.

I notice, while looking into your galery, that you are like a little storm-chaser hu? haha that's really nice - I wish I would be able to do something like that and could have the right places to get pictures of storms like you can do it such so wonderfull.

Fine shot.

How do you know when need to push the button to catch a lightning?

FramedByNature In reply to Bushido112 [2010-07-13 06:42:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Well, I used to have to do it just by having a quick reaction whenever I saw a hint of a flash. Nowadays, I just use a long shutter

Over here it is often not so trivial to get the clear view of the lighting. Though on the other hand, when the bolts are getting obscured by the clouds, it makes the scene look like it's lit with a giant softbox. In other words, it could momentarily look like an overcast day.

The photographer still needs to find a nice vantage point, and press the shutter release at the right moment, though.

Yeah it's pretty difficult for me to get a clear view, I envy those who live in open spaces This is probably why I'll end up living in the country when I'm older
