Description The "Celtic Tree of Life" design expresses the timeless concept of "As above, so below." Celtic knotwork and spirals are tree roots that reach from deep in the earth and grow skyward, up through branches, reaching for the sun and the moon. Knotwork border colors symbolize earth, water, air, and fire. Also, don't miss the dancing faery lights among the tree branches!

This is one of the best comments I've ever gotten - thank you! Am really glad that you're able to use it for mediational purposes. I've got a print of this here too that I can also stare at for a while - it keeps my eyes busy and lets my mind relax.

have a great day,

Kristen

No problem for the fav! It's a really beautiful piece of work, and Celtic knotwork has always interested me. I've always wondered how people can draw them so cleanly and accurately - I'll have to say 'Book of Kells' got me into it. I like all of the symbolism of night and day, earth and sky, and nature linking to what reminds me of the sacred oak. Your colors are amazing as well, and what medium did you use? Color pencil?

It would make a great tapestry, throw rug, or one of those blankets for draping over seats.

Yeah, the Book of Kells is amazing!

Actually, I hand draw the image, then scan it in and colorize it on the computer. (I've never really gotten such deep colors from colored pencils - probably my own shortcoming though.) This was one of the test prints I got when I opened my DA prints account and the colors came out fantastic - just like in the image - I was really happy.

so glad you like it!

Keep up the good work! I found your stuff through a link that someone provided to and yours was the first thing I saw. I thought it was traditional because it was listed underneath that - shouldn't it be digital?

You should make it into a print - it's that good.

Glad you found me and all that. I had a tough time categorizing that piece, as well as a lot of my other Celtic pieces - I draw them all by hand but then colorize them by computer, so it was half one category and half another. I figured that the essence was really in the hand drawing so I went with that, but you're right - could be digital as well.

And it IS a print! At the end of last month I opened a prints store through DA and have the Tree of Life print hanging on my wall right now - I was REALLY impressed with their quality!

(FYI, my prints: [link] )

Thanks for the terrific comment - keeping me grinnin',

Thanks! Yeah, originally I had uploaded the deviation as a wallpaper, but then changed it when I wanted to do a print - so I agree - LOL!

I really like this - the knotwork is great and I like the symbolism. I think it might look better without so much space on the sides, but it's still a great piece.

this is beautiful!
So intricate yet delicate at the same time, and full of details; and the colours are beautiful.
The only thing that disturbs me a bit is the background, it looks a bit too much "artificial" when compared to the rest of it...

It's so beautiful! I rarely come across knotwork with such complex color schemes. Admittedly, knotwork is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. As a person of Celtic heritage and a participant in many Ren Faires, I've truly come to admire it. I will certainly watch for more of your work in the future.

Thank you very much! And what a well-crafted comment, I must say - word wise - the words just seem very elegant to me for some reason! (Ahh - I see! I just went to your page, and you're a poet - I understand now. *grin*)

And thanks for the +fav!

Thanks! It was fun doing a piece where I could be so colorful, as opposed to 'themed' in a more limited way.

Consider yourself faved - for finishing a trees piece. I've got one that I set aside ages ago and haven't ever finished!

foxvox In reply to BWS [2004-05-08 20:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Bradley! What is it about a tree piece that we've each set them aside at first? Interesting!

Oh, I've been meaning to ask you - have you done your Celtic pieces in a vector-based program? I've been dying to get Illustrator - I've only been working in Photoshop myself, which doesn't necessarily scale well with minute details. Anyway - just curious.

Art O'Murnaghan did an amazing trees page in his illuminated manuscript, so maybe I wasn't feeling up to it.

No, I don't think I've ever done much with vector knotwork. I remember that I did use some 3D knots on columns once, and on three celtic crosses in a piece for a game (thinking that 3D models are more like vector art than they are like painting) but I've pretty much stuck to 2D, unless you count wood carving .

foxvox In reply to BWS [2004-05-10 15:22:48 +0000 UTC]

Ahhh. Wood carving - something I've been thinking about myself lately! A while ago I ran across a website of a man who carved trunks with Celtic knotwork and I was struck. *grin* What kind have you done, if you don't mind me asking?

When I have the space, I've also thought about doing linoleum block prints of knotwork, etc. A little softer to carve than wood - LOL.

I used to do relief carving to decorate musical instruments, but, hmm, I don't think I have any of that at my web site. Surface decoration on some harps, and a bunch of peg heads for dulcimers.

Thank you kindly! This was one of those designs that I drew months and months ago, and then just stuck in a folder and forgot about for a while as it didn't 'grab' me then. Guess it just took a while to mature in my head or something - LOL. (While I was working on this on the computer it also made me wish I had more computing power and a lot more RAM - ahhh, well)
