Description So, recently, I've been messing around with colouring styles on behalf of a challenge by my mentor. I've been having a tough time trying to emulate a style of one of my school's alumni, so I've been messing around with that and other things in both Photoshop and SAI and have been using this doodle of Lysander that I did up the other day. Here's some things that I got while playing around and figured I'd share.

The first image, at the furthest left of the picture, we have the flat colour of the lineart. I just put it here as the starting point to all of these.

The second version is basically my general way of a "painterly"-ish style when it comes to colouring. It's when I just usually have a grayscale shading layer multiplied over the colour layer. Here, it's the same basic principle, but I was using a green tone for the shading.

The third image is actually the same setup as the second image. Only here, the shading layer is overlayed over the colour layer instead of multiplied. I thought this one had a nice, soft look to it and find it a lot nicer looking than number 2.

The fourth image is again the same set up as the second - with the green-based shading layer over the colour layer. However here, the shading layer is screened. This one kind of gives it this... light marker or watercolour-y effect and again, I kinda like that. Nice and soft-ish

The last one... I'm not particularly proud of. This was the attempt to copy the one person's style and I... just can't get it. I only included it, because there are some nice things about this method of colouring - mainly the smaller details that are present on the face here compared to the others.

Oh and yeah, I was kinda playing around with lineart styles too here I guess

But yeah Yay for experimentation... Err. Kinda

Hey, don't knock yourself, I actually think the last one looks the best! Don't compare yourself too much to someone else. That last one looks great!

I have agree with these guys, I really liked the 4th one as well. I also really like the 3rd one.
Believe me, when you're trying to copy someone, it'll never be absolutely perfect.

I like the last one best, but you need more color in there! As a oil painter I end up putting a lot of little subtleties of color in my paintings - Something might be yellow, but I also allow for reflected light. By this logic, I would make the tip of his chin slightly yellowish (light reflected off of ascot(?)), his jawline more neutral with less reflected light, and his neck might have a lot of reflected light near the collar.

Overall, this kind of painting results in more depth, though seeing as your subject is not living, it can be hard to replicate the effect of reflected light etc on something you're not observing right in front of you.

Of course, all my advice might be for moot, seeing as I have no clue what artist you're trying to emulate :'D Would you be willing to send a link my way?

and hopefully I don't seem like a know-it-all prick... :c
