Description E.L.F Report (Evolved Life Forms)

by Dr. Platea Lutaris
Scientific Research Facilities

Species Classification: E.L.F
Sub-Category: Fae

Subjects underwent prolonged, extensive study of, and exposure to, Magic and Alchemy. Within 3 - 8 months, subjects exhibited these outward, physical changes:

1.Subjects retain their basic height, but they become gracile – slender, almost appearing emaciated, though dietary and physical conditioning tests show subjects to be perfectly healthy. (A faster metabolism, perhaps? To better provide energy for spellwork? Further study required.)

2.Subjects’ bones become longer and thinner. Autopsies show that the bones are, in fact, hollow. Despite this, the skeleton is very durable and all but impossible to break or snap. Our hypothesis is that the constant vibrations that run through a magic user’s body causes the bones to mutate thus to better conduct the various pitches and tones required for spellwork throughout the caster’s frame.

3.Subjects’ ears become larger and pointed at the tips – directing more sound to the Inner Ear. Auditory tests show that Fae hear a greater range of frequencies than humans. A Fae’s range of hearing can be likened to that of a canine.

4.Subjects’ facial features shift: the eyes become larger (though any shift in visual perception was negligible), and the forehead becomes slightly more prognathic. Autopsies show that areas in the Frontal and Temporal Lobes of the brain have expanded (especially the Left Planum Temporale). (Addition: Later tests have revealed a visual perception of specific frequencies – enhances ability to control Magic? Further study required.)

5. Subjects’ necks grow longer (by roughly 1 – 1.5 inches) to allow for greater expansion and contraction of the vocal cords. Multiple tests have revealed that a Fae’s vocal range is much greater than that of a human, allowing for greater versatility in tones and pitches. This enables the caster to practice, and be proficient in, a greater range of spells – however, the same caster cannot hit all notes in the Fae range. (Example: a human tenor’s range would expand to include the range that we would classify as a treble through that of a higher baritone; it would not expand to include lower baritone or bass.)

6. Subjects’ ribs expand outward, giving them an enlarged chest cavity. Autopsies reveal larger lungs and a stronger diaphragm.

All these physical changes serve to allow the body to conduct Magic more thoroughly. The thin, hollow bones allow the vibrations of tone and pitch to resonate more completely through the body (much like a tuning fork), while the longer vocal cords, larger lungs, and strong diaphragm allow for greater control over the Songs used to weave spells. Greater audio sensitivity and the increase of size and activity in the Left Planum Temporale enable the Caster to better discern what pitches are being used in any particular Spell.
