Estrella had always been somewhat of a loner, so when Carmen had asked her to take a small patrol around their area she had jumped at the idea. The ideal days of september seemed to be long gone as wind wipped around the tall grasses of the rockies and made the distant mountains blurry. The mare's long mane flashed across her face, causing her visibilty to be even less. As she walked along the high meadow mountaintop, a feeling of unease began to creep down her spine. She paused, smelling the air as if to determine the evil feeling's location. Multiple senses dulled because of the wind, she had to depend on her eyesight as she scanned the area, nostrils flaring in anticipation. It wasn't long before her intuition was rewarded, as down low in the valley below her two horses blew out of the trees, followed closely by a whole pack of wolves. Immediately Estrella sunk low behind a bush, keeping a wary eye on the two as the lovely buckskin roan sabino mare (Zephyra) and the bay pearl roan stallion(stallion 182) tried their hardest to escape.
The scene was intense as snipping and snarling echoed through the valley, with hooves flying through the air to try and connect to a hungry jaw. Estrella was about to turn tail and flee when her hoof slipped slightly on a pile of loose gravel. The small slip was nothing to joke about as it was just the catalyst needed to start larger rocks to slide. Chunks of earth began to fall away as well as Estrella scrambled to climb above the dirt avalanche. Momentum began to build and suddenly the mountainside was no longer full of the cries of starving canids, but the angry roar of the earth. The two horses had not stopped their flee away from the wolves to gawk at the avalanche, but the opposing biters had. They now recognized their folly as the earth fell towards them with unwavering power and had soon enough swallowed the pack in its own gluttonous hunger.
Estrella stood in horror as she watched the error she had made. Although no friend of wolves, she did not enjoy watching or hearing their screams as their lives were forfeit. Disgusted with herself, she took a small step back, unsure of what to do when a small squeak made her turn. A small ferret was sitting atop the skull of some creature and quickly skittered away as Estrella walked near. She found the bones belonged to that of a horse, and looking up, found the ground littered with them. Picked clean of meat, the bones had dozens of wolf prints around them.
Her guilt at the demise of the wolf pack slowly began to subside. The carnivors had obviously been a menace to her species for quite a while now, and it was a simple mistake on her end that had most likely caused many horses to continue on living.
The butterfly effect of what had happened was one she could not have predicted, and strange feeling of not being in control of one's fate came over her. The wind continued to whip as the valley once more quieted, and as she stood staring at the bones of a fallen friend, she pondered the responsibilites of action and consequence.
