Holy cow, this is pretty believable. the details and the functions are all laid out and rendered so neatly.

Someone should make it, hurrhurr.

It looks quite good, much similarity to a regular arm which is handy and discreet. Thumbs up.

It doesn't do anything too special. It's a replacement, not a handyman tool, lol.

Interesting design, I like the amount of work you did to make it look and work like a biological arm.

One thing I'm curious about is the ball joint thumb -- is it fully opposable? If not, doesn't that affect the grip? Does it give any advantage that outweighs its vulnerability vs a regular joint (sorry, just sounds like weird for weird's sake).

Of course, the fact that it's steam punk makes it heavy on suspension of disbelief anyway. I mean, do I really want a brass arm attached directly to my body

I do a lot of figure stuff, and I come from a technical background. My work's pretty thought/story-driven than anything.

I admit I don't really know too much about opposable thumbs, but it seemed like the best idea I could think up on the train. It's probably got a much larger range of motion than a real thumb, actually. But there's a brass plate on the back side of the hand which prevents it from rotating too far.

I don't think a hinge would have worked as well. The fingers, thumb included, need to splay to have the maximum usage of the hand. He has developed more specialized machinery which he can swap in and out if he needs other tools.

He's lefty, though. But he still needed help to build it.

There of course, is still a strong need to suspend ones disbelief that this arm could work at will. The brain, which is like, eletric pulse, would be nigh impossible to translate to mechanical energy to run the pistons within the forearm.

Oh, yeah, I don't have much to say on the thumb thing, now. You obviously put more thought into it than I originally thought.

Yeah. Lots of mechanical arms use muscle contractions, but they tend to be simple claws. Oh, well, it's fiction

I'm a thinker more than a do-er, so to speak.

Fiction is fun~ That's why I like it. If I wanted to read about things people could do in real life...

I'd just do them. !

Aberleigh [2009-10-13 00:42:41 +0000 UTC]

I love how much it resembles a regular arm ^^ like how the wires and plates resemble muscles etc. lol I wouldn't want it, I think it would be super heavy

fongmingyun In reply to Aberleigh [2009-10-13 05:18:13 +0000 UTC]

Yuh, figure drawing = good. I use a book by Eliot Goldfinger.

Yeah, it's at least ten pounds more than having a real arm. I didn't do the calculation fully.

Aberleigh In reply to fongmingyun [2009-10-14 01:33:16 +0000 UTC]

gosh thats heavy, I think it wold have the same effect as a messanger bag used everyday filled with books, like hurt his spine or shoulder

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to Aberleigh [2009-10-14 23:47:38 +0000 UTC]

He has the discipline to take care of it. Removing the "hand" part makes it weigh less, making it slightly easier to rest if he's not doing anything. It's grafted to the charred remains of his real arm, so there IS bone in there somewhere to lend it mechanical energy and take all the weight off his shoulder. But yeah, he's not got as much stamina as he did prior to its addition.

Gotta love all of these fine details

D: Omg, really? I'm honored. It's really just the mechanical translation of a real human arm.

TehEccoGod [2009-10-11 23:09:26 +0000 UTC]

mmm shiny anatomical mechanical parts. I can't think like that, and make it look like it would actually work. I like his overall character design too! but the arm totally makes it.

fongmingyun In reply to TehEccoGod [2009-10-12 01:33:53 +0000 UTC]

Omg, that's like.. the only way I think. I don't really make compositions so to speak - just designs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TehEccoGod In reply to fongmingyun [2009-10-13 03:58:39 +0000 UTC]

hahah yeah I should have known that. you always have pretty detailed character design intricacies. my designs are imprecise and change from one drawing to the next of each character.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fongmingyun In reply to TehEccoGod [2009-10-13 05:15:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the problem is when you don't have a story to work off of. Like, when you're trying to make something with a nice composition. It just lacks that natural flow

Fff. I never draw the same outfit twice, really. I just like, try to include specific character-defining elements.

sweet, i guess it would be slow, heavy and prone to breaking down or overheating.
i'd rather keep my own.
or genetically engineer my arm to be supah-fast/strong

No, unless you've added one since Otakon... which I suppose is possible, though I admire the rate at which you're going through physical therapy if you did....
