While a liger is what you get when you cross-breed a male lion with a female tiger, a tigon is what happens when you mix a male tiger with a female lion. You never see these types of big cats in the wild because lion and tiger territories don't overlap. And since male tigons and ligers are sexually sterile, there's not going to be any good reason for a circus to keep them.

Ew. I despise damn circuses.
They should be illegal, because of their crappy treatment of exotic animals.
Glad to hear he's got a good home in a zoo, now.
That's at least better than a circus.

How big is he compared to a pure lion/tiger?

Tigons are usually smaller or about the same size as their parents, while ligers are like twice as bog and heavy.

I've been to canberra zoo! I think this is the very tigon that I saw...so gorgeous! They are absolutely huge compared to a real tiger or lion.
