Question! On the earlier storyboard pages, the page was divided up evenly. Why do the panels on this page gradually shift to the right? Is it to signal where the camera should be? O_O

I'll bump in for this one- you are perfectly right- the shift to the right indicates not only the camera pan, but where the character should be during said pan. The background will be drawn as long as the shot needs it to be.

Ok, so then in some of the other pages and panels multiple arrows were used to show the movement of the camera, correct? Do you only shift the panels when the camera pans and when the character moves simultaneously? I'm really curious to know storyboarding works.

And thanks for answering my question, btw. ^___^

I think I know which page you mean by multiple arrows- if it is not near any of the characters or an object (that would be indicating the direction of a movement, like a doorknob turning), then yes it would be related to the camera move.
And yes, the panels would shift only during camera pans.
But it will depend on productions. In other shows I worked on, we did not necessarily break it down the same way- we'd draw the whole background, and draw all the positions of the characters on just one drawing. Well, only if there was enough space between the poses. Here, Aang's movement is so detailed and closed to each other, they would overlap and it would be impossible to read properly. So everything got broken down, to its proper space too.

I see... So have you drawn avatar characters in the same panel too, or only in other productions? What you said about Aang's movement makes a LOT of sense, but I'm curious to know the difference in styles between the productions you've done. Um, sorry for all the questions. I'm really curious! I've always wanted to be an animator. ^.^

There were THREE main differences between Avatar and all the other productions I worked on:
1) the kung fu reference for the fight scenes and more. Never had that much good video reference for movements before
2) the amount of poses and acting for each scene was a lot more detailed than in previous work. We were getting close to feature animated film level for the number of poses done.
3) separate images for easy filming for the animatic. The animatic is the putting together of all the storyboard images, film them and play them in sequence with the recorded voice. It helps a lot in the correct timing of an episode and to edit out extra stuff early on. Previous shows I worked on skipped the animatic part. The director would time out each scene using a chronometer.

I guess that's why Avatar is so well animated over all the different shows I've seen. Thanks for answering my questions. ^_^ If I have any more can I just send you a pm or something?
