Two reasons:
A) Carla used to be blonde, just like Alexia and William. Seems like a motif for Resident Evil villains, being blonde. Must be reference to the Nazi.
B) The C-Virus comes from the combination from G and T-Veronica viruses. That's how you can control all the crazy mutations. Plus, Alexia has a "Ant Queen" complex, the G-Virus is supposed to accelerate evolution, and C stands for Chrysalid. It all sorts of pieces together.

Though I bet in the canon, both Birkin and Alexia would want to rip Carla's guts off. They hate each other and are very possessive of their viruses. Imagine someone taking their viruses and MIXING them. XD

this is a survival horror, does not exist couples here^^ All couples are just some romance "what if..?" This is my opinion and the opinion, I think, the opinion of all "real" fan of RE saga^^
You don't need to apologize, I know exist that kind of ehmmm...fan? A fan who don't know about RE is not a fan.

What liked about him even more is this oddity of how he keeps "friendship" ( won't BS you, but feels more like a true) with that cold asshole Wesker and keeps his daughter with wife around And he is not a VILLAIN! He is like, he probably could've been one of the most realistic characters I mean his virus goal was his purpose, and he did ot act, nor was portrayed as a good guy or a bad guy. Just a family guy with a weird "friend" in sunglasses XD, family, and a job to do. So in RE, he pretty much just "hangs out".

Damn.. Now I can't erase the picture of family table with William, Sherry, Annette sitting, and Wesker invited for family dinner lol... William's appearance is brief and simple, yet I can't stop wanting some new material on that character from Capcom

Birkin was very young and already brilliant when he started his research! When Alexia appeared, she was even more young and already brilliant, and became regarded among umbrella employee as the best researcher (Birkin held that title before). Since the Research facilities were located in various locations, they were separated, and sort of competed in which one is the most productive, usefull, fast, etc... When something did not work out, there was a saying "If only Ashford was here", what pissed Birkin off ( i am not sure if it is a right quote). So put yourself in Birkin's shoes

I read about that so long ago, I believe I read it from Wesker's report, and I am not saying that everything is completely accurate
