In the docu-drama "Adventures in Time and Space", David Bradley took on the role of playing William Hartnell himself during his time as the Doctor. It was an excellent performance in my opinion. Later, he played the First Doctor in the show itself opposite Peter Capaldi.

In my personal experience, playing a role is hard enough if you're doing it seriously and professionally. Playing an actor with deteriorating health, who is struggling to play a role in a serious and professional way is a job I would not want to take on. The stress to do it properly would damage me. Props to Mr. Bradley.
