Description Australian Blue-tongued LizardTiliqua scincoides
Status: Not Evaluated
Taken at: Auckland ZooThey are technically called Blue-tongued Skinks but I've never heard a single Aussie who uses that name, which I why I put lizard instead of skink. They can grow up to around 40cm long and are named after their vibrant blue tongue. Female lizards of this species are ovoviviparous, which means their eggs hatch inside the mother and she later gives birth to live young. They can live for over 30 years too! I occasionally find them while out walking and they are usually very slow, however, if they have spent enough time in the sun then they can run extremely fast.
It seems even in New Zealand I couldn't escape Australia. A large portion of their bird species are also introduced from Australia which I found odd. They have some of our parrots and a few mammals which are honestly quite nasty pests.
