EDIT: just a thought: should I've done a selective perspective correction to get the upper right house lined up more 90°-ish?

great capture.. but
few things:
1) in my 22 years of life in florence i've never seen a sky like this
2) the lights are strange: palazzo vecchio and the roof of the uffizzi in the top right
3) how is possibile that 1 minute and few seconds before the sky was clean? [link]

hope that i'm making a mistake...

well I just replaced the sky for artistical reasons with a sky from another photo..
the differences between light and shadow were to extreme to capture it all and the original sky burned out, so I place one from another photo in it. I also could've done more exposures, one with the original sky just exposed right, but I didn't had a tripod with me

but everything else is just as it was in the original shot. the lights may look a bit strange cause I've done quite a heavy job with dodging and burning lightening up the shadow areas to show off more detail..

uhm and the sky you see, well I can't remember exactly but I think it really wasn't shot in florence, but well, why couldn't it be in florence? it's the same sky you have anywhere else

i'm sorry, but if i've to be honest.. i call that a photomanipulation.

i understand what you say about the 2 picture with different exposure.. but you didn't do it. and if you did it the final pic would be different from that: for the union of the 2 photos and for the florentine sky...
eheheh the sky.
i'm not a metereologist so i don't know why it can't be like that.. maybe the temperature, the wind, the position of the city in the plain, the smog, the altitude. but you can search in all the internet and where you want: you'll not find a sky like that in firenze..

yeah well sure it's photomanip..
but since I don't have any documentary ambitions here and I just replaced the sky and therefor didn't change any non-backround elements it's ok for me..

oh and I've searched for the sky I was using an I must disappoint you - it was shot two days after the original picture - in florence! 31.05.06

Were you in a square with a statue holding the medua's head?

FelixTo In reply to syrus [2006-07-25 23:18:58 +0000 UTC]

it was the piazza della signoria
yeah in the loggia dei lanzi (the left one on this pic) there is benvenuto cellini's "Perseus holding the head of Medusa"
nice thing

Yeah, I sat there on my last day before getting the train to Rome. A nice little square.

Nice job. All I can say.

Have you tried Photoshop's Image > Adjustment > Shadow/Highlight tool? It makes some interesting HDRI effects when you push the highlight slider to the right.

sure, but I tend to do it more or less manually with a dodge and burn layer - so much more differentiated there
