PNG saves it more smoothly, but it's a larger file than GIF. PNG is more intuitive with colors and shapes than GIF. ...As it's been explained to me.
$lolly is working on the issue of making these transparent PNG avvies viewable without a background in Internet Explorer. (PNGs have transparency levels, and IE seems to show them with backgrounds, while browsers like Firefox, show them as transparent.) I'm frustrated with having to use IE... I can't see my own work the way it's meant to be displayed. But at least some other people can.

PNG is 32 bit which allows more colors. GIF is your basic web color pallette. Downsizing a gif gives you a terrible amount of dithering. It's much the same with jpg. PNG, on the other hand reduces the size with a different dither formula, thereby keeps the image quality intact better. It's more vector based, and has less bleed than the pixel based formats.
You could use the dA grey as the background color. I'm sure you could get the color codes from the help desk.

As for backgrounds... It's transparent. IE shows me a white background, but I know it's transparent when I open it in my program. As for choosing white or DA green, I can't figure that out in my program. (Self-taught. Still learning.) It's not too important to me. It's SUPPOSED to be transparent.
