"I'm sorry for being useless."

Keith stared at Lance, feeling his chest tighten with emotion from the look on Lance's face. For several minutes, neither said a word. Keith wished he could say something, anything, but as he opened his mouth to speak he couldn't. It was as though an invisible fist had tightened around his heart, stopping any noise from coming out. Then Lance was moving past him, walking away as he patted Keith on the shoulder. 

"It's alright, you don't need to say anything. I get it. You're disappointed."

That was the last straw.

Waking from his horrified stupor, Keith whirled around and caught Lance by his upper arm. His fingers were painfully tight, as though he was afraid that Lance wasn't really there. Somehow, this angered Lance, and he wrenched his arm away.

"Lance, wait!"

"No!" Lance snarled.

Taking Keith by surprise, Lance grabbed him and pinned Keith against the wall. The expression on his face was frightening; torn between anger, desperation -and unless Keith was imagining it- heartbreak. Then Lance was leaning forward, pressing his forehead against Keith's chest. He held himself there for a full minute, attempting to get his breathing under control.

"Do you..." he grated out. "Do you have any idea..." He swallowed, and there was a feeling like shards of glass were lodged in his throat. He took a deep breath, trying to hold it together.

Meanwhile, Keith said nothing. He was watching Lance carefully, finding that it was suddenly harder to breathe. Lance noticed, and a moment later found himself embarrassed that his face had become warm with the realization. He pressed his face harder into the warmth of Keith's chest. He couldn't help it. He was still finding it hard to believe that Keith was right here in front of him.

"It was...hard for me when we lost you..." Lance muttered. "I wanted to go back...but they wouldn't let me." Lance's hand tightened around Keith's arm, trembling with suppressed anger. Keith winced, feeling the circulation in his arm being cut off. "We left you for dead...and I...did...nothing!" Lance's voice cracked on the last word, and it was a full minute before he could speak again. "I was supposed to be your friend, Keith! I was supposed to have your back! Instead you were almost killed because of me!"

At that moment Lance couldn't take it any longer. He began to cry silently; his shoulders trembling as he forced himself to stay quiet. For a while, Keith could only watch him, stunned. Then, slowly he raised his other hand and began smoothing the messy brown hair. He heard Lance's breath catch for a moment before evening out, and found himself smiling slightly.

"Lance..." he said quietly. "I need you to listen carefully, because I'm only going to tell you this once."

Lance raised his head. His eyes shimmered with tears, and multiple tear tracks stained his face. Keith moved his thumb over Lance's cheek, drying it carefully.

"It wasn't your fault," Keith told him. "It was my mistake, all right?"

Lance stared at him, uncomprehending. Keith sighed.

"I didn't tell the others, but I'll tell you. Long story short, I misjudged the situation. I acted too soon, and payed the price for it." Keith pulled Lance into a hug, holding him tightly. Lance held on, his cheek damp where he pressed it against Keith's shoulder. "You did nothing wrong," Keith said. "None of you did. It was me." He pressed a kiss to Lance's forehead, smoothing his hand along Lance's back. "I'm so sorry for putting you through that. I hope you can forgive me."

Lance drew in a shaky breath, before letting out a weak chuckle.

"You're such an idiot."

Keith snorted quietly. "Yeah. But I'm your idiot."
